I think they've tried a number of things from editing small sections of TopGear to air it in the USA to having an all new cast and format. I believe the latest attempt will have an American cast including Adam Corolla and some other people. That's all from memory though, so I maybe mistaken.

video teaser

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpGxfb-IRns (watch it in HD)

if that's any indication, then it is gonna be a good show after all.

I agree with some of the Youtube comments that the hosts look like "three guys who won a contest." The jaded/stuck up factor is one of the more entertaining thing about Top Gear. When Clarkson drives a car and is like "oh shit" about it, I take it seriously because I know he's driven a gazillion cars and has a lot of experience. But I don't know much about these guys.

Jay Leno should quit his stale latenight show and host an American Top Gear.

the hosts looked terrible in the trailer. hopefully they will use the stig's american cousin (BIG STIG!) as the stig.

wasn't the main reason the original american top gear didn't get off the ground due to funding concerns?

bbc = publicly funded = don't have to worry about sponsors pulling out when cars are bashed.

US channels = privately funded = automakers influencing the show with $$$

i like Matt Farah from theSmokingTire youtube channel myself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK_slw0W1xc

and it's Adam Ferrara (not Adam Corolla)

"Ferrara auditioned at the same local comedy club where Eddie Murphy launched his career. Before long, he was working all over Long Island "paying his dues." Ferrara next conquered Manhattan, sometimes working five sets a night, and going on the road around the country, which he still continues to do. In 1996 he was nominated for Best Male Stand-Up on the American Comedy Awards...

Away from the microphone, Ferrara, who claims he is a "nocturnal person," loves to go to the movies, shoot pool and play his Clapton-model Fender guitar. He is a huge Beatles fan and especially likes to collect their interview tapes. Ferrara makes his home in Los Angeles."

Top Gear caught filming in NY with SLS AMG, 458 Italia and 911 GT3 RS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h66rw57fxa4

Quote :
"The clip is rather mundane overall, however, the last minute will leave you squirming in horror. The city's streets aren't in great shape and the BBC Boys have to get their supercars from a section of road awaiting paving to a raised surface. If you love high-end exotics, you may want to look away, but don't. It's particularly terrifying to watch the low-lipped Porsche attempting to pull up. No wonder they gave 100-pound Hammond the keys to that one. "
