This was sent to me today. Interesting read. None of this has been fact checked.

Subject: UNC

Chandler's youth minister has been updating me about UNC about the NCAA investigation on facebook. Thought I would share it with you.

1. Southern Cal is already preparing a lawsuit against the NCAA if the NCAA is lenient with Carolina, especially since the sanctions against USC were for offenses committed by a coach and players who aren't even at USC anymore, while the offending coach and players are still at Carolina.

2. The head of the NCAA investigation was the AD at Miami when Butch just ditched the 'Canes and left for the NFL. Think he has it out for Butch?

3. More than half of Butch's recruits were labeled as "academically questionable" by even Carolina's own compliance board. You get that label if you meet any of the following criteria: below 900 combined on the Reading and Math portions of the SAT; score below 400 on any section of the SAT, score below 19 composite on the ACT, or have a class rank below the 50th percentile. More than HALF of Butch Davis' recruits. And somehow these guys not only made it through admissions, but qualified under ACC rules.

4. Several players were admitted as "Partial Qualifiers," and should have been on academic probation according to Carolina rules, which is all fine and well, but there's one problem with that: the ACC BANNED Partial Qualifiers 5 years ago before Butch even set foot in Chapel Hill.

5. This is not just about coaches accepting benefits, agents going after players, and players who should be ineligible. There is word that the NCAA is investigating some of the Rams Club's biggest donors to verify where the checks they wrote actually went.

6. This investigation is not about the NCAA collecting evidence. They already HAVE plenty - it's about giving Carolina a chance to come clean, and so far, they're failing miserably. Coach Blake's resignation means nothing to the NCAA. If anything, it make him/them look worse because (a) his resignation means he cannot be compelled to interview as an employee of the state under oath, so (b) it can be seen as an admission of guilt. Oh, and (c) they were going to nail him anyway.

7. Old-schoolers in the Rams Club and Board of Trustees never approved of Butch's hiring anyway. This could be the end of AD Dick Baddour too.

8. Bottom line, the phrase being used the most right now is "Lack of institutional control". Thus would be a total embarrassment for Carolina and will set the football program back about 10 years. Possible sanctions right now: postseason and bowl ban, loss of scholarships, loss of TV games, forced firings, vacating previous seasons. And that's all before any possible legal action taken by parents of players and donors whose money was funneled into "benefits". Oh, and any other action the state of North Carolina may take as well, since all school employees are state employees.

Several schools have been approached by the NCAA to request information about the following:
*Clemson: Brandon Ellerbe flipped to UNC because his mom moved to Chapel Hill. Where did she get the money to move?
*Tennessee: Corey Miller claims Carolina assistant John Blake (AKA Black Santa) tried to bribe him to come to UNC, and Brandon Willis did flip to UNC. That was posted by Corey to the UT Facebook wall.
*USCar: Because their TE Weslye Saunders got dragged into the investigation. He's practicing, but don't know if he'll be allowed to play. Spurrier has defended Saunders in the media, and is rumored to be very upset at Carolina's coaches for how Saunders got implicated.
*Bama: Because their DE Marcel Dareus has been suspended pending a review for reinstatement by the NCAA as a result of the investigation into Carolina. Dareus was supposed to be a key player for Saban as he prepared Bama's D for defending the national title. Think he's got reason to be mad at Butch/Carolina?
*Duke: Cutcliffe is pissed at UNC for a variety of reasons to do with in-state recruiting, as Cutcliffe has told the media more than once that he wants to give local players more of a presence in the Duke program.
*UGA: Because A. J. Green is being investigated by the NCAA

...and other interesting factoids...

*UNC back-up QB Bryn Renner's dad became head coach at East Chapel Hill High this summer...he was given the "lead" on the opening by Butch Davis. Guess whose son is the ECHHS starting QB? Last name Davis.

*The father of a recent UNC commit from Virginia accepted a job two days before his son gave his verbal commitment to UNC. His father moved from South Carolina to......Chapel Hill.

And now it also turns out that anybody who was denied admission to Carolina in the years the offending players were admitted may be allowed to subpoena the school for the admission records for those players, and sue Carolina.

"Athletics and academics are in tension by the nature of their time demands, but athletics and academics cannot be allowed to be in conflict in a great university. The evidence is clear that the academic processes and standards...have been misused in a number of instances to benefit some individual...players."

Not words spoken recently, but words spoken by the Chancellor of the North Carolina university system in 1989 when academic violations were uncovered at NC State under Jim Valvano.

Valvano's resignation was requested from the basketball head coach and AD positions.

At no point did any of the improprieties include the following:

1. Tutors assisting student-athletes improperly 2. Tutors performing
academic tasks for student-athletes 3. Agent-player contact, including
gifts and cash 4. Questionable admissions 5. Coaching staff having
knowledge of improprieties

Well, so far with the Carolina case, we have...

1. Tutors with alleged sexual/romantic relationships with players.
2. Tutors turning in papers for student-athletes.
3. Agent-player contact, with evidence from player tweets.
4. Already gone over the questionable admissions.
5. John Blake was a member of the coaching staff, and more and more evidence is coming to light about how much contact he had with agents.

NC State didn't wait for the NCAA. NC State put in place sanctions upon itself back in 1989/90 - ban from postseason play (ACC and NCAA tournaments), loss of scholarships, loss of tv revenue, loss of sponsors, etc. Those sanctions tore the basketball program to shreds, and arguably, they still haven't quite recovered. Those violations were much less serious than what Carolina is facing today, and yet, NC State took on these sanctions ON THEIR OWN, when the NCAA would very likely have done less.

What did Carolina do? Oh, they suspended a few guys for one game, and they're waiting for the NCAA. And the UNC Chancellor has issued a vote of support for Butch and walked by his side out of the Georgia Dome last Saturday.

The Carolina Way.

Oh, and in case any of you may be wondering why the ACC has yet to issue any official statement of any sort regarding this issue, since it involves one of its main programs, it's probably worth remembering that the current ACC Commissioner John Swofford was himself a former college football player..........at Carolina. A Morehead scholar, no less.

I don't even know why I read that

And I don't know why I want to actually debunk any of it

But

Guess who the head coach was at Wakefield from 2001-04? Last name Rivers.

P Rivers dad was a great football coach in Alabama, and Wakefield was a new school in need of a coach. Nothing real suspicious there

The old coach at ECHS got fired because he taught some elective that got cut for budget reasons. Renner's dad was a coach for ten season and teaches PE. I don't think there's any big conspiracy there.

Paul Dee isn't heading the investigation, he's the chair of the NCAA Penalties and infraction committee.

yeah, that was pretty much the weakest implication in that block of hearsay

it's not amazing that a NFL/NCAA coach's son is a HS football player

i'd also find it hard to believe that there would be shady machinations in place to win favor with a guy whose son is such a great recruit that he's the backup to TJ Yates

I still don't understand why the school couldn't have just cut the class and asked the coach to teach PE instead.

So with this making national headlines, one thing I have not seen, is any mention of that researcher/whistleblower that UNC crucified when she came out and said there were athletes that were basically illiterate. I find that odd. What gives?

Agreed. Stupidest thing is when the whole university shuts down, including the LIBRARY, on game day, and you can't park anywhere on campus whether you are a student, faculty, or staff member.

Lol, academics, what's that?

(There are a 100,000 people just a few hundreds yards from me right now, I can hear them and even see them.)

Has DH Hill ever shut down for a State game? Let alone, I don't know why parking on campus would be an issue when the basketball arena and football stadium are off campus.

Yea but what about basketball?

Also, CNN is asking a good question. Should the degrees earned with some of these credits be invalidated?

I think that's the hard part...determining just how many phony classes there were. Because there were definitely legitimate AFAM classes and people earning legitimate AFAM degrees.

To be honest, I talked to a few people this weekend who took AFAM classes who said they were "hard". "Hard" may be relative, but they said they actually had to attend class, do homework, write papers and got graded and got "C"s. So I believe they were legitimate AFAM classes.

Bullshit. I dated a few UNC sorority girls in AFAM classes (it's true that it was known in the greek system), they never had to do homework, partied every single night, and barely had any assignments. The harder class involved a few short easy papers, maybe a couple tests that they seemed to do fine on without studying, and some of the classes didn't even require that. I'm sure that harder classes exist somewhere in that department, but these girls and their friends didn't seem to take any of them.

Yes, becuase the post directly before mine seemed to question whether there were any legitimate AFAM classes, and I was privy to information directly related to that inquiry that I felt compelled to share.

114 of them to be exact. Because that’s how many ACC titles Carolina won from the 92-93 season until the most recent 13-14 season. And as far as I’m concerned they’re all tainted. Those titles are all “ungood and distrue”."
