He's a special ed teacher doing a restraint. Certain special ed students will go absolutely crazy and it is the teacher's job to restrain them to prevent any injury to the student or others. I used to work at a school with incredibly violent teenagers and have seen restraints done many, many times. Take a thrashing, crazy teen and it is not surprise that her arm got broken.
Many more details need to be released before passing judgment.
One a side note she was probably confused at who exactly was talking to. 9/16/2010 9:34:43 PM |

^^I totally feel you.
But this was a 5 year-old child.
I'm still very sympathetic to the teacher though. If it was me, I'd let the kid do what he or she needed to do. But with lawsuits and shit these days, we're expected to protect kids from outbursts and shit....
^Public schools should start by adding arts/recess/gym back into the curriculum. After being cooped up in a classroom doing test prep all day with a twenty minute break to shovel shit food down their throats, nobody should be surprised when the kids go buck wild. 9/16/2010 10:41:25 PM |

^^ There was a special kid at my high school who was like 6'7" and 400 lbs. I would be terrified if he ever lost it. 9/17/2010 4:04:13 AM |

Yea we have some of those special needs kids. The worst ones are the ones that have little or no limb control and when they go nuts, it can be bad. I understand the "therapeutic hold" sounds ridiculous on a 5 year old, but often times its for their safety. Mom was an EC TA for years and she came home with all sorts of stories about things that happened to her. She got stabbed by a kid with scissors once, thankfully they were plastic. Still bruised the shit out of her.
As for ^, I don't know what schools you've been to lately, but most schools still have PE/Art/Recess. My schools all still have that shit going on, even with budget cutbacks across the board. I think the students and teachers would go crazy if they didn't get a break from each other. 9/17/2010 7:11:22 AM |

We had a student less than 10 whose parents refused the terapeutic hold. The only other option when he freaked out was to lock him in a small empty room and wait (up to an hour sometimes) for the parents to arrive with his behavioral assistant. He would be bloody by the time he got out. Would repeatedly hit his head on the wall and floors, bite and scratch himself, slam his whole body into the walls and floor.
You have to consider how much a 5 year old, or any child with these types of issues, can freak out. It can be insane and intense. Imagine trying to pick up a feral cat.
