Outside of teaching, research, and advanced degrees...what kind of jobs can an ncsu bio major reasonably expect to have a chance at?

hate to be a downer but a bio degree isn't really the most lucrative in the science field. I'd recommend getting a graduate degree or combining it with another field like chemistry or engineering (i.e. biological engineering > biology) 9/23/2010 3:06:19 PM |

I got a Zo degree, too...but it was news to me recently to hear that it was lumped in with a general Bio degree at state now. Pretty fuckin lame.
But yea, it was shit because only connections got me [temporary] jobs that were worth a damn after getting my BS. Took me 2 years to get a good tech job that was supposed to be temporary (6 mo), ended up being 2.5 years before I left to enter grad school, simply because all of the people I worked with/for convinced me I was the sort of person who needed to go to grad school. Sometimes I regret leaving my job to go back to school, but then I remember I'm still getting paid to do what I love, and I'll get a PhD once I'm done. And I was the sort of person who swore that I would never go back to school when I got my BS.

Labs. If you don't have any experience you'll most likely have to get a temp lab position to give you enough experience to get a permanent job. The only issue then will be going w/o employee benefits like insurance.

I have a bio degree from 2007. I started at Wyeth doing clean room work, then I got a job doing sales of industrial equipment, now i am an associate scientist. If you have a degree at all you can get more jobs than just what your degree is specific for...I also might be going to Belmont University in Nashville to aquire a music-business degree 9/24/2010 8:57:07 AM |

I got my BS in Natural Resources and recently got my MS in Marine Science. After I got my BS, I was determined not to go back to school. After a year of teaching kids how to fish and doing tag-recapture studies in FL making $31k, I went back for my MS. There are more opportunities for folks with advanced degrees, but it's a tough market right now. If you have a science-related job- keep it. If you are in school, stay in school as long as your funding allows. I have a shitload of experience for someone my age (25) and good grades, and I am having to fight against PhD's right now for BS- and MS-level jobs.
Shit sucks man. Stay in school. 9/24/2010 9:17:56 AM |
