you will click on this thread. i have almost no doubt about it.

also Steven Vogt should relearn probability, re: that planet everybody is talking about

Quote :
""The chances for life on this planet are 100 percent," Steven Vogt, a UC professor of astronomy and astrophysics says. "I have almost no doubt about it.""

Give me any odds of what you think life existing is.

Let's do something large.

Let's do something like....

"There's a 1 out of 1x10^10 chance."

That means there's a one in ten billion chance of aliens existing.

Is that not rare enough for you? Okay. Let's do 1 out of 1x10^15. That's a one in one quadrillion chance.

Based on observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, there are at least 125 billion galaxies in the universe.

It is estimated that at least ten percent of all sun-like stars have a system of planets, there are 6.25×10^18 stars with planets orbiting them in the universe.

If even a billionth of these stars have planets supporting life, there are some 6.25×10^9 (billion) life-supporting planetary systems in the universe.

6,250,000,000.

Now, what are the odds that NONE of these have any life on them?

I realize this thread is about life re: that planet everybody is talking about, which I am not, but hear me out...

The fact that Earth exists is enough information to know that there are more that just one planet in this Universe that contains life, and if not this Universe, then the collection of Universes outside our own.

Even accepting the several obvious errors in math and logic in the exposition of the problem, the actual answer to the final zinger of a question at the end of that quote is that there's a 99.99938% chance that none of them have any life on them (if you assume independence between planetary systems). One of the biggest self-pwnts in TWW history.

I once asked my professor if he thought there would be life on Europa, with the basic idea that if there is water there is life.

Without hesitating he said, "Of course". I'm inclined to agree with him, even though I was shocked as to how quickly he answered, "yes".

Liquid water is awesome and strange in so many ways. It is a nearly perfect chemical environment.
