Wait, so are you saying you just recently heard of Car Talk?

And I don't listen regularly, used to listen a lot on road trips with my family when I was little (like 10 years old little).

They usually come up with a really likely cause based on the symptoms.

The problem is that there are probably 2-10 potential issues at stake and the callers just need to find a decent mechanic 99% of the time.

Horrible show. They give the absolute worst automotive advice, and rarely give enough information to actually teach anyone anything. Between their stupid jokes and snorting I have to change the channel. I find it easier to listen to The Splendid Table and their faggy food critics.

if you don't try to think of it as a "car" show, but rather just a talk show for entertainment, then it's more enjoyable

Bingo to all these...I LOVE listening to them cracking on cars like Yugos, anything Italian, Chrysler K cars, etc.

But the advice is definitely geared toward people who have no goddamn automotive knowledge and need only the simplest recommendation to take it to a shop. Hey, you gotta play to your audience.

"At first, I had the impulse to begin this story explaining why I enjoyed Car Talk as a kid even though I didn’t know anything about cars. But to even supply an explanation is to violate the spirit of what made the radio show special. As long as you found the task of identifying and solving problems inherently fulfilling, no matter the object or concept in question, then Car Talk was for you.

So for longtime listeners, it perhaps won’t come as a surprise that one of the show’s co-hosts didn’t actually like cars. In fact, he had a very conflicted relationship with them.

i think about and miss car talk almost every weekend, there just isn't a good replacement.

there is nothing better than listening to car talk on warm sunny weekends with the windows rolled down, on the way to lowes, or the garden center, or the auto parts store, or wherever you need to go for your weekend project. it was perfect escapism and i don't think anything can replace it.
