I'm leaving on Friday and have not booked a place to stay yet.. does anybody know of cheap places to stay? I've heard hostels are good, but there are quite a few and I don't know which ones I can trust... any suggestions?

Travelodge Hotels, they were basic, but always very clean and it beats a hostel since you have a private bathroom.

I stayed in a St. Christopher's Inn near London Bridge. I liked it. Got pretty shitty in the bar next door.

seriously, if you had gone a week earlier I would have given you a room for free. My family was scheduled to head over this past sunday and my mother and father had to back out at the last minute. This left my brother with two prepaid rooms and only himself to use them.

London sucks. I was there for a whole week and, I shit you not, found 0 english people in my wanderings. The girls running the hostel I stayed at were australian, and most of the people I asked for directions from on the streets were from eastern Europe (I even actually ran into a couple other groups of americans). And then all the people on "the tube" put so much effort into ignoring everyone else on the train, that it was astonishing how alone one felt when surrounded by so many people.

Go see the sights, check out Trafalgar square (I learned a lot about Admiral Nelson there, he's a cool dude). See some art, ride the Eye, and then go somewhere else in England. Hopefully you meet some English people with more interest in social interactions.

I stayed in the Fox and Goose hotel when i was there and i would recommend it. There's a Fuller's brewpub on site and it's right down from a stop on the tube....
