Ah the onion. However, this:

"Can still fuck, cook meals, and watch movies together without a piece of paper"

Is dead on accurate.

Most do. However, until it is legally possible to receive all the same legal protections (i.e. hospital visitation, inheritance, etc.) they'll still want the piece of paper.

Marriage available to all legally able to consent adults or to none I say. I'd like to see marriage reduced to a mere religious formality which carries no legal weight personally, but it's pretty firmly entrenched in society as a means of forming a family unit, so that seems unlikely.

I would have thought it to be higher in this economy, with the likelihood one would be out of work, or underemployed, and one would have better access to better benefits.

Although, for those going back to school, and underemployed/unemployed, grants offset the benefits, and make staying "single" the financially stronger choice.

i'm almost in my mid 30s so i've seen many of my friends get married through the years. one thing is for sure, the younger you get married the less likely it's going to last.

The cost of a wedding is a large financial "barrier to entry" to marriage. And if you try to do a low key/small wedding with few guests, you risk pissing off people in the respective families.

running to the court house was so easy: married in 10 min in front of 2-3 friends, at the oxford for a round of drinks (they gave us free champagne btw), off to the Dominican early in the AM

total cost: marriage application + if you bought a new outfit

Wow. With divorce rates, people waiting until their 50s to get married, and the Sunset Squad death robots I guess there will be fewer and fewer people that will make it to their 50th wedding anniversaries.

Fuck that, just live.

At my wedding it was just our parents, 1 guy we made friends with on the flight to there, 1 girl we made friends with in the hotel we were staying at, and 1 colleague of my wife (she is from the country where we got married).

We invited everybody, but we held the wedding on a far and remote island (Mauritius) .

*************************************************************************

While I was typing the above, my wife asked what I was responding to. When I told her, she immediately said "oh man tell them to get married in Mauritius", and the 2nd thing she said was:

Tell them not to get married, you argue, the sex decreases... it is better just to date

yep. and solely from people I have met, it's nearly impossible to tell if this experience will lead to an apathetic attitude towards marriage (and a greater likelihood of getting divorced) or a more powerful motivation to make things work in a marriage. Obviously few people go into a marriage thinking "if it doesn't work, I'll just call up a lawyer right quick and control-z this mess", but some people from broken homes will either resort to divorce immediately because the have been through it as a child or make themselves miserable to avoid it for the same reason.

Of course, you could just have the balls to not care if you piss off the respective families.

I want to get married, and the reason I haven't done so yet is b/c I haven't found the right person. I haven't "not" gotten married for fear of a divorce; though with the high percentage of divorces these days it does make me treat relationships more seriously before thinking about any life-long committment.

Unfortunately, as we get older, the available dating pool becomes saturated with single parents and eccentric weirdos.

Try finding a single woman over 30 who isn't a mom or in the early stages of cat-hoarding.
