So, I've noticed there are a lot of people who are adamantly against certain foods: coleslaw ranch cottage cheese etc etc
I have a question: are you going by the time you tasted it years ago and have decided that you never will like it, or do you conitinually experiment because maybe one day you will like it?
i've found myself doing the latter and i blame it mostly on my dad and an ex boyfriend. my dad continually makes me try stuff that he likes and is well aware that i don't. and im a good sport and usually ill take a bite and tel him....yup still hate it but there have been several foods that i have come around and actually like them now because of he insists i try it every time. (horseradish and boiled shrimp being the first that comes to mind)
and then we have one of my exes. who was easily the pickiest eater i have ever met. if i put mustard on a sandwich he would flip and make sure he couldn't even see it when we ate. there were several occasions we couldnt eat together b/c he couldn't stand to look at my peas or carrots or onions whatever (the only veggie he liked was potatoes....seriously). i once referred to his shirt as mustard yellow and he gagged. because of this experience i now have a negative view of picky eaters and people who abhor a certain food (and for those of you who are like that i still <3 you! i just can't help but to think....is it really THAT bad? -yes i know its stupid )
with all of that being said-even if i don't like something i tend to make myself try it again in hopes that i will like it
the things i have tried over and over and still cant get a taste for (whether it be b/c of texture or flavor): hard boiled eggs coconut banana pudding (im getting close to liking this one!)
i'm sure theyre are more....lemme think......

it is REALLY hard for me to think of a food i totally hate
coleslaw is something i go through phases with.
sausage i also go through phases with.
i don't like lamb (but haven't tried it in awhile hahaha...because i just get grossed out at the thought)
i don't like liver
hmmmm. i will have to think harder about it.
the things i have the most trouble with are things that mentally get in my head. like horse. i have never even tried horse but i don't think i could eat it just be cause i love horses. i mean i guess i eat cow all the time and i think they're cute. and pigs. i don't know, i think i'm just weird with food. most of what i don't like or don't eat is totally a mental thing i think, not a taste thing.
outside of strange meats, i experiment. and with seafood, i did REALLY well in asia and was super proud of myself for trying EVERYTHING set in front of me. lots of chewy tentacly stuff. but i was pleasantly surprised by some of the things i was served. so it was totally worth it!

I'm not a big fan of plain white cake with frosting -- the cheap kind you see everywhere. I have to be really fucking stoned and hungry to enjoy it.
(Frosting without milk fat is the lose.)

I'm a cynic, so I suspect most people tasted it years ago and decided they'll never like it. (stubborn close-minded losers.)
Hey Joie, how about deviled eggs? (They are heavenly) OMG broccoli and hard-boiled eggs are delicious! (soft-boiled is better, though)10/14/2010 2:22:14 PM |

^ Oh dear god do I hate licorice, it really blows my mind that people can love that stuff. Black jelly beans are the worst food/candy known to mankind. One of my co-workers actually had a pack of licorice gum that he chewed on all day and it almost made me puke.
Some coconut flavored stuff is good, but coconut itself I do not like at all. I used to hate tomatoes but now I pretty much put them on all sandwiches I eat. And lastly, although I am ashamed to say this, I do not like sweet tea whatsoever even though I'm from the south. I keep trying it constantly from different places, but I just can't seem to acquire a taste for it.
Oh yeah, and cottage cheese is fucking disgusting...

It's ridiculous the amount of stuff that I eat now that I wouldn't eat as a kid..or shit, even when I was in high school or college.
Being in the restaurant industry and living in an area where there is a lot of great food available, I've learned that pretty much anything can taste good if it's cooked the right way.
That being said...I'm still not the biggest fan of peppers. I'll still eat them, but if ordering anything that usually has them on (philly cheesesteak or certain pizzas) I'll usually ask for them to be taken off.
I can eat some blue cheeses, but would much rather have other cheeses if I'm making a cheese plate.
Oh...AND FUCK YOUR QUESTION...THESE ARE THE FOODS I DON'T LIKE. 10/14/2010 2:22:38 PM |

Yeah I've never smoked but my whole family has and I can eat damned near anything now. I still don't like mayo too much though but it's good in potato salad and deviled eggs.
It's weird because people say something is to salty or too spicy but there is no too salty or spicy for me unless drinking salt brine or getting chemical burn is included. 10/14/2010 2:25:34 PM |

I'll eat just about anything. I'm not too crazy about the texture of cottage cheese...but I don't mind it with other things.
I'll also try anything (food-wise) once. Just had chicken hearts last Saturday at Brasa. Wasn't too bad, a little chewy and reminded me a bit of liver in flavor. 10/14/2010 2:25:38 PM |

When I was a kid, I didn't like anything with a "mushy" texture. I couldn't eat mashed potatoes, peas, beans, etc...the texture of those foods in my mouth made me want to gag.
I've gotten over that. I still don't like peas though.
And I definitely held on to "not liking" these things because I didn't like them as a kid and I just never ate them. Now I'll pretty much try anything. 10/14/2010 2:26:10 PM |

i think traveling really helped me become less picky. not just to asia. but i was really picky when i was younger but the more i traveled and branched out the more i became open to trying different things. plus i LOVE food so i feel like i'll try anything. even stuff i used to not like (or thought i didn't) like sushi, i tried and kept trying and then eventually i realized i LOVED IT and had just been either eating the wrong thing, or bad fish. plus i think something about it was still mental. i was convinced in my mind it was gross, so i always thought it was gross. then once i became convinced it WASNT gross, i was more open to trying it and trying different kinds until i found things i liked. 10/14/2010 2:26:43 PM |

Even when I was a full vegetarian (because I hated meat) I would still try it once in a while to see how I felt about it. I still don't like red meat or pork or anything grisly or greasy, but I've started eating chicken and fish. I am also annoyed by picky eaters of the mindset that they've tried something once or twice (usually veggies cooked poorly) and therefore they'll never try it again because they won't like it period. I hated when people would assume that vegetarian meant picky eater. I would eat pretty much anything that wasn't made of meat, and ate a hell of a lot more variety than anyone else I know.
I also think a lot of people's distaste for things is mental. Like when they say "I hate all veggies," I doubt they are really going into trying things with an open mind. Instead, they are thinking, "I am going to hate this." (and before you call me out, I'm sure I did that to some extent too, but I did TRY to have an open mind)
The only non-meat thing I can think of that I do not like despite trying many times is cilantro. Even that I'm getting used to. 10/14/2010 2:31:39 PM |

I think a lot of what I have aversions to is because I am a diabetic. I know that sounds very odd but sometimes I just can't stomach some food and I often wondered if it has to do with my lack of insulin production and the connection to nutrient cells.
I can't eat a lot of rich foods like sauces, baked goods, italian foods, things of that nature because I just hate how I feel after eating it. I think mine is mostly mental as well.

I do realize that I don't try licorice. The reason is that it never inconveniences me or anyone else for me to not like it. It's pretty rare, and I doubt I'm ever going to be having dinner at someone's house and have them serve it to me. When I was a kid I hated raw onions, so I kept trying them because, well, they are common. Other things (like chicken and fish) I kept trying because they are common, liking them would mean fewer instances of someone having to ask "where can you eat?" or figuring out special dishes to make me when I visit. My distaste for licorice doesn't ever actually matter. Though if someone really really wanted me to try it, I would. I just don't go out of my way. 10/14/2010 2:47:13 PM |
