Driving down H-1 on my first week here I noticed something about the driving here that made me angry. They throw the "Shaka" whenever they cut you off. It's when you loosely fold in your index, middle and ring finger into your palm with your pinky and thumb sticking out.

A driver threw his hand out the window giving me the "shaka" when he cut in front of me without using a turn signal.

"What the hell is that? Am I supposed to be cool with you cutting me off?" I shouted out loud.

So I sped up and did the same thing in front him and followed up with the shaka. I looked in my rear view mirror. He didn't look pleased.

"I guess not..." I said out loud again.

Oh, and rain here is equivalent to snow in the North Carolina.

I got run off the road multiple times while riding my scooter over there. It's cool, just throw up the shaka!

I used to live in Hawaii when I was 12-13 and so I cannot speak for what it's live to drive there, but I do know that people are more laid back. Seriously who gives a crap if he cut you off. At least he acknowledged it unlike some assholes who are oblivious to their horrible driving.

^exactly. shoulda dropped some nails or something on the road. come on man, you're old enough to know that just cutting him off isn't really one-upping him.

there's really no excuse for cutting someone off, not using your turn signal, and then acting like it's all cool

i, for one, love to act like an immature douchebag and match speed with people who are trying to get in front of me before a lane ends when there is plenty of space behind me (since i'm almost always going 10+ over the speed limit in the first place)...it might make me no better, but it sure is satisfying

the speed limit is around 50 for the most part going toward Waikiki. So the guy is going around 40 (the minimum) when he came off the exit and so I almost plowed him. Speed Minimum is the king of the road here.

Anyway, so regardless, I had to get around him at that point because I didn't feel safe driving behind him.

But apparently, the Shaka is the "all driving sins are forgiven" signal.
