jeeez now you guys are making me feel bad for taking a year to get one. I had internships over the course of the year just nothing permanent. My degree is mechanical engineering job but this isn't exactly an engineering job but it's a career path I like. More web/technology analytics (which firefox doesn't say is a word). Anyway I'm happy.

not making you feel bad, was just curious about your major.

with a mech eng major i would think jobs would be easier to get, with thousands of industries around.

Yeah but I've been picky about what I want to do. I don't want to move to some bumfuck town and I don't want to do about 75% of what mechanical engineers do. I have a lot of interests but am still picky at the same time. This job lets me travel, small company, and I like the people. I'm happy.

^seriously. Mechanical Engineering is a very broad degree and I have specific interests. I've been searching and finally got offered a job outside of engineering and took it. I see it going somewhere and I like the company and people who I'll be working with. What's funny is my boss is a mechanical engineer too.

I would be happy with 40k and all expenses paid, at least that's what I'm looking forward to if I get accepted and pass OCS next year.

Congrats Neo, now dump your 460's and get triple 480's.

One of my professors, who is on a lot of search boards for new professors, says they have trouble finding professors sometimes b/c potential recruits often consider Raleigh/the triangle region to basically be "bumfuck"

different strokes indeed.

I would classify Raleigh as "bumfuck nowhere". I mean there's plenty of out of state people who think Charlotte is our Capital...

Does the term "bumfuck" have to do with bums fucking?..or butt-fucking?
Is it actually in Egypt?

Also, how about podunk? Apparently, there are actual places with that name.
I'd rather live in podunk than bumfuck...

um, what the fuck?

why didn't you just major in Information Sciences and then you could have got 20 jobs like that in the time it took you to get one.

seriously, what a waste of a perfectly good ME degree.

You're actually quite wrong about most of that. Engineering was one of my interests but not everyone gets a job in the degree they went to school for. It's not a waste if you got through the degree and learned the critical thinking and problem solving skills that can be applied to a variety of fields.

Plus if I had majored in information sciences I would not have gotten this job or anything near as good. My boss is a mechanical engineer and lots of non-engineering companies like hiring engineers because they know they're smart and can think. I worked at a bank for a while and I had managers telling me they love hiring engineers because often they're better at the analytical/math side of finance than finance or accounting majors.

Having that engineering degree doesn't mean you HAVE to go into engineering. It just opens up quite a few possibilities. Most fields are going to look at an engineering degree a lot more favorably than a communications degree or information technologies degree.

okay fine, if you say so.

but just remember this: the longer you stay away from real engineering, the more and more difficult it will be to get a job as a real engineer.

then before you know it you just work some random corporate IT department with a bunch of IS grads and 2-year-diploma admins, and they find out you have a ME degree, they're all going to be like "wtf d00d"

Not something I would ever do. I see more possibilities in this career path. Pays better and more room for advancement.

well, i'm still not getting why you got a degree in something you didnt want to do, such that it took you a year to finally do what (i assume) you want to do.

but whatevs, congratulations on getting a job anyhow.
