Quote : | " The Spanish language television network Univision is pulling television and radio ads from the group Latinos for Reform, which urge people not to vote. In the ads, which were set to begin airing on Univision on Thursday, a Spanish speaking narrator cites the Obama administration's lack of action on immigration reform and tells viewers "This November we need to send a message to all politicians. If they didn't keep their promise on immigration reform, then they can't count on our vote."
"Don't vote this November," the narrator says as a bell tolls. "This is the only way to send them a clear message, you can no longer take us for granted. Don't vote." |
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/19/network-pulls-ad-asking-latinos-not-to-vote/ The video above is an English translation of the ad that was pulled from Univision before airing. Holy fucking shit. Can anybody get behind this? Also, IBT "30 Rock did it!"10/20/2010 11:25:15 AM |

I can get behind this. Sort of.
Its a message that should be broadcast to everyone.
Though I wouldn't mind going the Brewster's Millions route either. Vote none of the above.

Quote : | "LAS VEGAS — A Republican campaign urging Latinos not to vote was yanked from the airwaves Tuesday amid an outcry from Democrats that it was a dirty trick against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in his hotly contested race against Republican Sharron Angle. " |
Quote : | "The Republican group Latinos for Reform had planned to eventually run the commercials in Nevada, Florida, California, Texas and Colorado through the Nov. 2 election." |
Quote : | ""I think it is terrible," he said. "It is a cynical political ploy to try to drive Latino votes to benefit a Republican candidate in Nevada who would never vote for immigration reform."
Robert de Posada, the founder of Latinos for Reform, said he is trying to determine whether he can legally challenge Univision, which approved the commercials Friday. " |
Quote : | "De Posada is the former director of Hispanic affairs for the Republican National Committee. He also worked on Social Security reform under former President George W. Bush" |
I heard some about this last night, Univision saying they regularly push civic involvement and voting, and that this is counter to their message. Looks like Robert may sue them to try to put it on there, but even if he does pursue legal action & won, I doubt it would be wrapped up before the midterm.
Also, as a side note, the whole no vote on immigration reform in the ad is incorrect. At the very least they voted on the DREAM act (didn't reach a filibuster proof majority though), which is far from comprehensive, but was a vote on some immigration reform:

Quote : | "This bill would provide certain inadmissible or deportable alien students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. as minors, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency if they complete two years in the military or two years at a four year institution of higher learning. The alien students would obtain temporary residency for a six year period. Within the six year period, a qualified student must have "acquired a degree from an institution of higher education in the United States or [have] completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor's degree or higher degree in the United States," or have "served in the uniformed services for at least 2 years and, if discharged, [have] received an honorable discharge."[2] Military Enlistment contracts require an eight year commitment.[3] "Any alien whose permanent resident status is terminated [according to the terms of the Act] shall return to the immigration status the alien had immediately prior to receiving conditional permanent resident status under this Act."" |

Not voting out of principle is about the dumbest thing you can do. I've heard countless people, from all sides of the spectrum, espouse this view, and it makes no sense. Why hand political power over to the people that do vote, while you're sitting at home bitching about how everything sucks? Not voting doesn't prove anything to anyone, and it doesn't change anything. Even if the majority of people didn't vote (oh...), that wouldn't "send a message."10/20/2010 4:16:44 PM |

^ I choose not to vote in 2006 bc I didnt feel the Repubs needed to get reelected with how they were spending, and I couldnt bring myself to vote for the dems that were running. I learned my lesson. 10/20/2010 4:37:41 PM |

At the very least, vote for some third party, even if its a write in vote. I think that would send a stronger message than not voting. 10/20/2010 4:40:59 PM |

I can almost see it. The Democrats have screwed them, the Republicans want their blood, even the libertarians that are available are against them...why vote for someone who wants to get rid of you? Meanwhile, there's not many places where they form a large enough voting bloc to elect their own, independent people.
If my goddamn idiot republican friends had let Bush throw some reforms there way and stopped using them as a tool to scare the base during election years, they could be happily reaping the benefits this election. As it is, Latinos will still vote Democrat (except some of the Cubans, and even they're turning). The GOP could deliver a master stroke if they had the wets on their side, but nooooo, dey tuk urr jerbs. 10/20/2010 5:23:03 PM |
