I think each city kind of makes an "official" statement regarding what the right day is. I heard on the radio Cary (or maybe it was Raleigh) said it was Sunday, I think. I don't know about anywhere else.

Yea this is annoying. Just do it on Sunday (aka Halloween). If Halloween falls on any other night of the week (fri-sat) most people don't even think about which night to trick-or-treat on. When it falls on Sunday there is always some big panic about which night to celebrate.

Based on mdozer73's link it sounds like most localities have the sense to say

1. We don't give a fuck when you trick-or-treat.
2. October 31 is Halloween, isn't that when people usually trick-or-treat?

Only a few backwoods places said "do not trick-or-treat on Jesus day".

answering the door all night two nights in a row kind of sucks

you could just go out to dinner both nights and avoid it altogether

whenever halloween is on a week night, kids go out trick or treating. sunday is gonna be the same as any other weekday, trick or treating will be on sunday.

The only issue here is bars/nightlife. Obviously people won't want to go crazy on a sunday night so it makes sense to have all the alcohol-based halloween celebrations on saturday.

no, that is how it should be. But all the neighborhoods around me have agreed individually on which night they are trick-or-treating. Most of them are doing it on Saturday and a handful on Sunday. It's stupid.

i can't believe you guys care this much. (if you have kids i think it may be a little different)

leave candy by the front door or turn your front light out.

problem solved.

Not the same.

And all I care about (which I think most people's gripe is) about when kids go trick or treating. I'm not giving candy for two nights...shit ain't cheap (candy prices get jacked up before Halloween) and I'm not succumbing to greedy kids. I live in a neighborhood where I know I'm going to get hit up BIG TIME on Halloween...I'm not doing it two nights in a row.

Yeah I don't get it either. I still don't understand why the hike was last night. In 2007 Halloween fell on Wednesday and the hike was that night. I guess State students have to be in bed early, so they can get up and get to school on time. These issues come up in years like this because Friday 5:00 pm till about Sunday 2:00 am is the "stay up later than normal and party" time for people of all ages. Sunday is the "behave and don't stay up late, so you can be ready for work, or school in the morning" day.
