It's laudanum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laudanum
Basically Robitussin with opium equivalent to a 1% solution of morphine in it. The hooker on Boardwalk Empire was downing that shit like crazy on last week's episode. 10/31/2010 9:18:56 AM |

^Thanks spooky, just came to post that. Its Opium in liquid form. Lot of "high society" used it at the time. If you read the Master & Commander series, Maturin has an addiction to laudanum as well. 10/31/2010 9:21:24 AM |

If you can get through the thick period and nautical language then they're great. Not being an expert in the speech of the early 1800's and knowing next to nothing about sailing I'll admit it was difficult for me, but I really enjoyed the first one (and hope to check out others shortly).11/1/2010 9:25:55 AM |

because HBO likes to cancel good shows before they have run their course... I'm waiting for east bound and down to get the axe, and then game of thrones to never be released 11/1/2010 11:20:25 AM |

Hell yes, but as Grumpy said, they aren't an easy read at all. It is very specific in the language and nautical terms used. After I saw the movie and thought that shit was great, I immediately picked up the first book and read it cover to cover. By the end I was enjoying it, but completely lost. So I went and picked up several books on the history of British tall ships, the various terms, etc. Shit, go on Amazon and look for books on the Master & Commander series. They have them explaining many of the different sails described, types of guns used, various names for ships and what the ratings mean, etc. etc. I seriously got into the time period reading this shit. My only problem was I got burned out reading it all. I got about halfway through the series and then abandoned it. Tried to pick it up later and was completely lost. Still want to pick it back up, maybe after I finish off the Dark Tower series.11/3/2010 10:51:59 PM |
