For $1 you fill out a sheet with I think five numbers and one designated powerball. You can pick the numbers or have the machine pick them out for you. You can do more than $1, not sure what the limit is per sheet.

buy a ticket with "quick pick" numbers (random) or pick your own numbers...wait for the bi-weekly drawing of numbers (wednesday and saturday nights, i think) and then match them up

you can win prizes other than the jackpot...getting just the powerball or 3 of the "regular" numbers are the minimums, i think

My aunt used to always play the numbers she got in her fortune cookies. She won $1000 one time so I guess it wasn't a bad strategy.

that's how it used to be, anyway...not sure if there's any difference now that NC participates in both

^ no worse than any other, i suppose...historically, more people win with random numbers, but the odds are the same whether you pick them or have the computer do it for you

Odds of winning the big prize are better with mega millions.Powerball is like 1 in 195 million. Mega Millions is like 1 in 175 million.

The odds of winning the smallest prize (3$) in powerball are 1 in 60 and 2$ in megamillions is 1 in 75.


Odds of winning anything in powerball are better than MM.

Winning a prize in either Powerball or Mega Millions is independent of the amount of participants. It only matters how well your numbers match up with the ones drawn. Sometimes, multiple people have the same numbers and they both win the jackpot. In that case, then they split the winnings.
