I just hate the logic. People who need to get to the library instead have to take other routes.

The other routes are less taken, darker, and historically have had more crime (I mean the Pedestrian Tunnel on the other side of Talley is where all those muggings happened last year basically).

A rational adult should be able to read or hear whatever is thrown at them and make their own decision as to what is wrong or right.
Censoring a view is never any good. I'm referring to true censorship such as this blackout of course; not just the masses of people overwriting ignorant statements on their own accord.

Not saying there aren't situations where it is warranted, but if you want to really make a change you have to do so by setting a good example and through open discussion.

People are truly censored all of the time. I'm sorry if you still believe in "freedom of speech." We have freedom of political speech. But we're still censored in that we can't spread blatant lies about people (slander/libel), you can't yell "fire" in a movie theater. There's nothing political, or even valuable in some hate filled speech on a wall. It's nothing more than a nuisance.

It's also worth mentioning that nobody is keeping these people from posting their hate on the Internet, in a newspaper, on their facebook wall. Only in a tunnel, and the last time I checked, the tunnel isn't a right.

What type of message would the school be sending to black people if they allowed "nigger" to be written in a tunnel that easily sees 1000 people go through it a day? They would be fostering an atmosphere of hate, prejudice and racism.

If they have something worthwhile to say, then I have no problem if they say it. If they want to paint a picture of Obama and write "Maobama" under it, fine. But if they want to paint a picture of a hanging black person with the words "dead nigger" besides it, that is unacceptable to be allowed on a school campus. Go do that shit on your own property or where someone will allow it.

hate speech is still speech, and in this country if it isn't a direct threat, it is still free speech

but its still protected under the 1st amendment, which is everything the FREE expression tunnel is about.

just like the people at the tunnel are protected by their constitutional right to gather and protest.
i don't think it should be okay for them to "block off" the tunnel, but the permit they obtained through the University said they could do so, so they are.
