There is a legend. The legend of McDonald's burgers that don't decompose. For years, it's been accepted as a disturbing fact. But a new study conducted by a curious consumer shows that it's not just meat from Mickey D's that stays oddly "fresh." The study put several different burgers of the same size (but from different places) next to each other and then left them alone. None of the burgers rotted, which led the experimenter to conclude that "there's nothing that strange about a McDonald's burger not rotting." Score one public relations point for Ronald and company. 11/6/2010 11:07:25 AM |

Golden Delicious shouldn't be that soft, though I do believe Honeycrisp are superior. It's unfortunate that Honeycrisp are $Texas at the grocery store, though we did get some for $.99/lb at the farmer's market last weekend.
Mealy? No, that's Red Delicious. Cannot stand the texture of those things. 11/7/2010 7:45:02 PM |

i have never experienced a mealy red or golden delicious if it was a "real" apple...those disgustingly enlarged abominations are not "real" apples...the smaller, natural ones are excellent
that said, i do prefer just about any of the other varietals

They don't know who the honeycrisp's parents are
Quote : | "U.S. Plant Patent 7197 and Report 225-1992 (AD-MR-5877-B) from the Horticultural Research Center indicate that the Honeycrisp is a hybrid of the apple cultivars Macoun and Honeygold. However, genetic fingerprinting conducted by a group of researchers, which included those who were later attributed on the patent, determined that neither of these cultivars is a parent of the Honeycrisp, but that the Keepsake (another apple developed by the same University of Minnesota crossbreeding program) is one of the parents. The other parent has not been identified, but it might be a numbered selection that could have been discarded since." |
It also sounds like production is limited to the North American season - but they might start growing them in New Zealand soon so we can have them twice a year.

I'm sorry... raw apples are delicious. They're good with a sharp cheese too, cuz of the contrast of flavors. Golden Delicious used to be my favorite before I discovered these Red Delicious I don't like the texture or flavor of, but they're good for making Charoset. What apples are good for cooking with? My boyfriend wants an apple crisp, but my generic crisp recipe (usually used for blueberries or blackberries and/or peaches) just calls for apples, and a few recipes I've seen online just say "all-purpose apples" (o.O) or your favorite apple. What do you say, TWW?11/8/2010 1:03:54 PM |
wolfpackgrrr All American 39759 Posts user info edit post |
Any apple that is firm and tangy or tart will serve you well. It's also usually good to use a mix of apples when baking imo. I'd say do a mix of honeycrisp, mutsu, pink lady, etc. Or do what I do and ask the people at the apple stand for their culled apples. They're the ones that are too small/lumpy to be sold as grade A apples but are perfect for baking purposes (cheaper too). 11/8/2010 1:27:00 PM |

I feel like I should get the headaches checked out. I have been told by my regular doctor that it could be a pollen thing and one of my friends told me her allergist said fruit at times mimics pollen from trees and that is her problem. I also think the natural sugar content might be too much for my type I diabetes.
I guess I will continue to have headaches because I can't stay away from these apples. 11/8/2010 2:16:01 PM |

I have a Honeycrisp sitting about a foot away from me in my lunch bag, and I cannot eat it right now because there are other people in the office and I don't want to be that jackass crunching on a whole apple and making all kinds of noise.
