At the risk of lots of quality trolling:
I head back onto active duty for the Army in February as a JAG officer. We're allowed to submit a basing preference list that's based off of a list of posts with anticipated need (which are listed below). I have to rank my top 8 in order of preference.
The only catch (other than the obvious one that there's no guarantee that you'll get any of your top picks) is that I can select only 1 of the available "most requested posts" (which are 1) Europe 2) Ft. Carson, CO 3) Hawaii 4) Ft. Lewis, WA 5) Military district of Washington [D.C.] and 6) Virginia) - Listed in bold below.
The other rule is that you cannot be stationed in a base in the state where you took the bar exam, which knocks out Ft. Bragg.
Here are the available posts: 1) Ft. Benning, GA 2) Ft. Bliss, TX
3) Ft. Bragg NC 4) Ft. Campbell, KY 5) Ft. Drum, NY 6) Europe 7) Ft. Eustis, VA 8) Ft. Gordon, GA 9) Ft. Hood, TX 10) Ft. Huachuca, AZ 11) Ft. Irwin, CA 12) Ft. Jackson, SC 13) Ft. Knox, KY 14) Korea 15) Ft. Lee, VA 16) Ft. Leonard Wood, MO 17) Ft. Leavenworth, KS 18) Ft. Lewis, WA 19) Maryland/Northern VA/Military district of Washington 20) Ft.Polk, LA 21) Ft. Riley, KS 22) Redstone Arsenal, AL 23) Rock Island Arsenal, IL 24) Ft. Rucker, AL 25) Ft. Sam Houston, TX 26) Ft. Sill, OK 27) Ft. Stewart, GA 28) White Sands Missile Range, NM 11/10/2010 11:00:30 AM |

Yeah, I too thought the "Europe" along with all the other very specific locations was funny.
Where have you lived before? If you already did EUROPE then seems like you should try somewhere else 11/10/2010 11:21:47 AM |

That's the Army for you (cue the SNL celebrity jeopardy clip: "This continent is east of Europe. Here's your audio clue: "ASIA.""

I've never lived for an extended period outside of NC, although I've spend varying smaller amounts of time for training at Ft. Jackson, Lee, Lewis, and Benning. I liked Lewis a lot while I was out there, although the lack of sunshine might be an issue.

Nothing, except for its proximity to D.C. The Pentagon and D.C. area bases are all extremely popular among JAG for whatever reason.11/10/2010 11:30:40 AM |

False. I could never betray the Canes, especially not to a division rival. I could see myself going to games of some non-conference team if I lived elsewhere, just to have live hockey in my life.11/10/2010 11:37:51 AM |

Pops was in the Army so as a kid I lived in the following bases. Ft. Drum and Ft. Leonard Wood are basically cut off from civilization, but if you are into outdoor activities they are nice places. San Antonio could be a good choice . I like Texas though.

We have offices at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. It's really close to Mexico. My coworkers that live there say that they often go into Mexico or up to Tucson (30 minutes away) for weekend activities. Phoenix is 2 hours away. Sierra Vista itself doesn't have a whole lot going on outside the military base though.
That's about all the help I can provide.
Nevermind, I also had a buddy stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO twice. He said it was horrible. The only thing to do is go to the porn strip mall where they had a pawn shop, a bar, porn store, and three titty bars. You had to go there because nothing else was available. St. Louis is about an hour away I think.

Europe would be awesome, but I'm going to hold off on it and try to get it or Colorado the next time around.
Right now my list is looking like:
1) Ft Lewis, WA or Fort Stewart, GA 2) Ft Sam Houston, TX 3) Ft Benning, GA (That one's open to be bumped down, I've heard mixed things) 4) Ft Hood, TX 5) Ft Rucker, AL 6) Ft Campbell, KY 7) Ft Bliss, TX 8) Ft Eustis (If Lewis isn't on the list) or Ft Gordon, GA 11/11/2010 3:12:50 PM |
