There's been some more pronounced resistance to new measures by the TSA for using body scanners that reveal basically a naked image of whoever is being scanned. And if you opt out of the scanner, you get a full body patdown. The whole thing is obviously irritating and invasive, but i understand the TSA is just trying to cover their own asses. and while the effectiveness vs burden of these measures is questionable, i'm not personally going to fault TSA employees for doing their job.

Anybody had to go through one of these yet? My family is flying in a few weeks and I'm pondering which route to take. Especially for punchmonk since she's pregnant. i'm not familiar with the safety record of these things, but it is a concern i suppose

I think I'd rather someone see a brief, semi-distorted image of my naked ass than run their hands all over me and my downtown bonanza.

Either way, I doubt either route is a prolonged process.

The Drudge Report's been going crazy about it; it's his new outrage du jour.

Here's a fun story to contribute:

So, here's a list of the airports with the full body scanners:

Quote :
" Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ)
· Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL)
· Baltimore-Washington International (BWI)
· Boise Airport (BOI)
· Boston-Logan International (BOS)
· Brownsville-South Padre Island Airport (BRO)
· Buffalo-Niagara International (BUF)
· Charlotte Douglas International (CLT)
· Chicago-O'Hare Airport (ORD)
· Columbus International Airport (CMH)
· Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP)
· Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport (DFW)
· Denver International Airport (DEN)
· Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport (DTW)
· Harrisburg International Airport (HIA)
· Indianapolis International Airport (IND)
· Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)
· Laredo International Airport (LRD)
· Las Vegas-McCarran Airport (LAS)
· Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
· McAllen-Miller International Airport (MFE)
· Memphis International Airport (MEM)
· Miami International Airport (MIA)
· Milwaukee Mitchell Airport (MKE)
· Nashville International AIrport (BNA)
· Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)
· Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)
· Providence-T.F. Green International (PVD)
· Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)
· Richmond International Airport (RIC)
· Rochester International Airport (RST)

· San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
· Tampa International Airport (TPA)
· Tulsa International Airport (TUL)
· Valley International Airport (HRL)
· Washington DC's Reagan Airport (DCA)"

There is a definite health concern with these scanners. I even know quite a few people in this area that refuse to go to Reagan or BWI.... instead, they go to Dulles to avoid these scanners

Haven't been through one yet, but if I ever fly again I am sure it'll come up (as Newark is my closest airport). I am fairly certain I will just refuse the scan and get a pat down- seeing as I have gotten patted down every time I have flown in the past two years anyway.

It's not like these scanners are going to make a difference anyway. They can invade peoples privacy all they want, but I still feel like it's a coin-toss every time I set foot in an airport. I don't feel that the "well-trained" TSA folks are likely to keep any of us out of danger.

edit: Damn, I thought Newark was on the list to be one of the first with them Good to know they don't have em yet. (not like I can afford to fly anyway.)

FYI flying in general has increased radiation due to less atmosphere above the plane to filter it.

Yup, I did it on my last flight.

Fuck TSA, and fuck all the silly ass Americans who continue to vote for politicians who think that TSA, the PATRIOT act, etc. are a good idea.

I actually did a paper on this for my National Security Law class. I think my biggest problem with the full body scanners is not that they have them--but that there's not a good system for saving/destroying images. The machines actually do have the capacity to store the scans, and they have been stored in several instances. There is not a system in place to determine which images to store and which to delete immediately, and with the education level of the TSA employees, it's ridiculous to leave something like that up to them. They end up printing out people's images and either poking fun at body parts, or asking celebrity's for autographs. I really believe it's an unconstitutional search and seizure, but the court's will probably say that it's implied consent, since you don't *have* to fly. But really, not flying is a limit on the right to travel, which should weigh against a finding of "constitutional." It'll be interesting how this plays out.

I think this is something I have a problem with. As a whole, the measures taken at airports are ineffective and have little impact on your safety. There are so many ways to get around the security measures, especially when "TSA Guidelines" are so readily available online.

I fly every week. They are at RDU and 10 total will be soon. You always have to go through one. It seems random, sometimes I have to go into the body scanner and sometimes I get to go through the regular metal detector. The TSA agenst who "know" me sometimes have me go throguht the metal detector. In other cities is not so easy. Last week in Wichita I experienced TSA's new pat-down procedures, they dont habe the body scanners. Needless to say it was very rough and invasive.

The body scanners take a little longer and you can not have anything in your pockets, paper, id etc.

They make you empty pockets of all items, not just metal.
After you exit the scanner, you need to wait in front until they "all clear" is given. Take about three times as long as walking through the regualr metal detector.

The two are not even loosely connected.

TSA is there to provide a feeling of security, not actual security. You're more likely to be killed by a bee than a terrorist.

If I fly again, I'll opt for a pat-down instead of body scan. Also, I'll have to figure out a way to conceal my deadly plastic spork, rat basturds keep taking it.

I would not go through these scanners and am glad people are actively speaking out against them. They're ridiculous imo.

I wish we had these bad boys running from Atlanta to NYC. I'd never bother flying again.

I was thinking of opting out every time I fly (and someone on WRAL suggested a national Opt-Out day), but some of the reviews of the new pat down make me cringe. The only person allowed to touch my crotch is my husband. So, I think my end result is just driving instead of flying.

I especially like the fact that the new body scanners are completely useless for detecting anything inside the body, so just wait for somebody to try to sneak C4 onto a plane by hiding it in their ass or swallowing it. Mandatory cavity searches for everyone!

True but until that happens I'd rather take a train than deal with airports. Too bad our long distance train system sucks in this country

^^^And they have a hard time detecting things behind the body as well. So, if you aren't made to turn 360* they're completely ineffective. But then again, the metal detectors don't pick up every trace of metal either, it's only designed to alert on something the size of a knife or larger.

^^^^so you want them to do that too?

because im sure they will.

so if they are gonna trample some of your "rights" the might as well trample all of them and leave you cowering naked in the corner

coo.

^^i just dont want no drama on my flight, and id rather everybody get felt up than have people be "randomly" selected for searches

funny thing is....

about 1.5 years ago, we had one of these scanners at work. After messing around with the thing for a few hours, my buddies and I thought it was cool as shit. But we also agreed that this would NEVER be used in the airport because of privacy concerns.
