Planning on heading to Bragg next week to visit some friends that are posted there. I have my concealed carry, and do so, especially when traveling. My state and NC have a reciprocity agreement.

What are the rules for visiting a military base? Since Im traveling throughout the week, its not as though I can leave it at home. Recommendations? Rules?

Be very upfront about it upon pulling up to security check? Maybe store it unloaded, locked in the case, and in the trunk? Do they have a weapons check-in at the gate?

Federal property so concealed carry is prohibited. Period. If it is anything like the military bases I've been stationed on, they don't even want you carrying it on post without having it registered with the provost marshal.

I never even got a solid answer as to whether or not it was legal to carry concealed on the part of Bragg Blvd which is on Fort Bragg proper, but which does not go through any check-points.

If you leave the gun locked and unloaded in its case and answer any questions from the gate guard honestly, you shouldn't have any problems.

For the most part you won't be able to take it on base. However, there is a slight chance that Bragg may allow a firearm to be checked in at the visitor's center, via the base MP or armory. This is mostly an old school thing, so I'm doubting it's even done anymore, especially with the recent military base defense rule changes. I'd call to find out what you can do, but chances are you'll have to find someway to leave it off campus.

^Pretty sure locked and unloaded doesn't matter. The bases I've been to all had rules/signs stating "No Firearms Allowed" and gate security/MPs confirmed that you can't bring them on base no matter what (AF bases). However, other people have had different answers from different branches (as I said above).

Yep, no guns through the checkpoints. They check in your car pretty thoroughly at the civilian gates (under seats, inside consoles, glove compartments, but not inside bags). You could probably smuggle it in, but god help you if they found it. Best bet is to leave it at home or find some place off post to leave it.

Just hide it in the trashcans outside the gate. I scored so many free pocket knifes in school trashcans from kids ditching them in the metal detector line, haha.

Last time I went to an air show, they had a guy in a humvee waiting at the bus by the parking lot collecting knives. I thought, "oh well, that's the last I'll see of my Old Timer". When we got back at the end of the day, the same guy was still there. Without a word he looked at my face, reached into a box of about 50 knives and handed me my exact one. Dude was a PRO.

After Fort Hood, you can forget about any base (especially one the size of Bragg) having any sort of relaxed personal firearm policies.

If worst comes to worst you could probably find an indoor swimming pool or gym or something that has lockers. Just get a one time pass or something and stash the gun locked in the case in a locker then come back and get it whenever you are done on the base.

Solution 1 : Call Fort Bragg and ask them. Make sure you talk to the right person. Also have your buddies ask around.

Solution 2 : If your friends all live on base, see if they have a friend living off base where you can leave it.

Solution 3 : Find some woods and hide it there. Cover it up with leaves and shit. As long as no one sees you hide it, they won't go looking for it. If you really wanted to you could possibly chain it to a tree, and then cover it up.

Never ever ever ever bring a gun onto a military base.

Just don't even fucking bother, you're not going to need it while you're there. Don't leave it in the car either or try to hide it because if they find it your ass could end up arrested. That's how it worked at the shipyard I was at and I would imagine many military facilities will operate much the same these days.

Yes, you like to bring your concealed weapon with you while traveling. You are visiting a government complex of sorts.

You want to find some way you will be allowed to transport a firearm onto the premises and just want to know the best way to do it without breaking the rules. My point is that, in my experience, if you are caught with a weapon on the military bases I visited (rigid knives, collapsible knives over 2.5 or 3 inches in length, tasers/stun guns/mace, projectile weaponry, etc) you will have boots on your neck and get arrested (of course my security clearance would have been revoked and I'd have been fired as well, but in the same situation you would likely just be arrested/detained and have your weapon confiscated and end up released (probably without your weapon) after they decided you were not a terrorist or psychopath). Even if you're open about it that won't necessarily make things better (at least if they have the same shit ass contractor security they had where I was located, who were itching to play cop). Try to drop it off with a local gun shop for a few hours while visiting or something, just don't have it anywhere near you when you try to enter the base. That's my experience with large military facilities with high security.

May I ask why you feel the need to always bring your gun with you when traveling, refusing to even leave it at home for one weekly trip? You're not a social worker in the ghetto or something, are you?

Would you feel differently about this if it had it been my rifle instead of my handgun?

I absolutely could leave my weapons at home when traveling. Since it is a holiday week and a good number of my friends and family will be getting together, and shooting is an activity that we all enjoy, I plan on traveling with said weapon(s).

The situation is that I would not be able to make the additional stops, either before or after traveling to Bragg, to drop off or pick up stuff.

Carrying while traveling is not strictly for defensive purposes. Not trying to turn this into a pro/anti- gun thread.

Anyways, Ive got all this figured out. Again, thanks for the help throughout....safe and happy travels to all.

you know why the guy at Fort Hood was able to kill the number of people he did? because people were unarmed... even the people trained to have guns aren't allowed to have them. not to start a argument but this country was founded by and fought for by citizens with guns. The power of the US has always been in the population until the recent years. I personally think we need to get away from always relying on other people to take care of us. Whether it's protection, food or shelter. we need to be able to rely on our selves.

I don't want this to be taken as fanatical. Yes i carry a gun, no i've never had to use it. I also wear a seat belt but don't plan on having a wreck.

Remember, when you only have seconds the police/help is only minutes away.
