on a whim I got "ugly" sweet potatoes from the farmer's market. They had light, very wrinkly skin and light insides. But they were absolutely delicious. The flesh was sweet and buttery with a velvety texture. It was a bit extra work to peel cause of the wrinkles but OMG ... totally worth it.

Went to the farmers market this morning to get our veggies for the week. Though I guess I was "early" the market is supposed to be open from 5am. I go up to a peach stand and ask for a basket of peaches, holding out $5. Dude goes, "We're not open yet and I don't have a dollar change."

"Okay, so just give me an extra peach or two and we'll call it even."

"But we're not open yet."

At which point the peach lady across the aisle says, "I'll sell you peaches," lol. I also bought a watermelon from her since she wanted my money more than the other guy

I noticed last weekend that the market doesn't use an apostrophe, but I think the restaurant does (I can't remember what the signage at the location has, but when I was there I remember seeing a mix of all three on different things)

then on the site half the time it's Farmer's.

I did it last year, it ended up just being too expensive and way too many things were coming in the boxes that I didn't use or didn't like. This year I am just going to the farmers' market more often and buying the things I like

My family used to do it but we did a box from an individual farm. It was great! I want to start doing it again. I'm thinking of doing one from a local, organic farm rather than the Produce Box. There's a couple different options from nearby farms:

Yeah, with these boxes you must be an adventurous eater and not picky. Although, I know that Hilltop Farms' box is really more like a farm share and you pick out the vegetables you want. I haven't found a vegetable I don't like so these are perfect for me. And if you are ending up with too many vegetables, then just can or pickle them for use in winter!

Oh yeah, and I saw an ad for this CSA box in the Independent Weekly this week:

Yeah, people need to keep in mind that when they do those CSA's and farmshares, they have ZERO control over what it is that they get.

So if you're like me, and only want Tomatoes, Cucumbers, etc., and have no interest in squash, radishes, eggplants... then a CSA might not be a good idea.



That said, my late-bloomer tomatoes are finally sprouting in my backyard, so i'm excited about that. keeping an eye on them everyday. I'm actually using a topsy turvy... against my better judgment, but the result has been astounding as to the size of the plant itself. My plant hangs in excess of 6 feet.

Not necessarily true. They have ones now where you buy points and then use those points to choose the produce you want. But that said, if you're expecting to get summer vegetables in winter, tough luck.

I don't specifically dislike much of the vegetables they sent me, but when they sent 4 eggplants to use in a single box, I feel a little ripped off - and a person can eat only so many eggplants in a week before they never want to eat another eggplant. There were multiple times when I'd add up the cost of the vegetables if they were purchased at HT or Farmers Market and it'd be like $12 - when I paid $25 for the box.
