[first world problems]

i hate stemware...yes, it's elegant and adds a dash of sophistication, but i can drink my three-buck chuck out of a dixie cup and be happy

but my wife likes it and i keep breaking the cheap glass that we have (i don't really do it intentionally, but i'm far from delicate when washing them)

anyway, it wouldn't kill me to have some decent stemware and drinking glasses, but i'd rather spend $10/glass for something that won't break with every clink than to spend $1/glass and keep buying new ones (and cleaning up the glass from each one i break)

so what are some good, solid, break-resistant brands of stemware or drinking glasses? seems like schott zwiesel has some lead-free titanium oxide/zirconium oxide-reinforced crystal (patented as "tritan," i think) that's dishwasher safe and has good reviews

Do we really need this much technology to drink?

Crystal, laser-etching, wine breathing, etc.

WTF?

i'm fairly certain that i never once implied that we "needed" this technology to drink...in fact, i'm fairly certain i specifically noted that it's just for looks (i also mentioned first world problems in case it wasn't clear)

anyway, by your argument, your hands should be good enough to just drink water (which is all you really need, anyway)

The titanium crystal is cool stuff. However, you're looking are more than $10 per glass.

quagmire02 asks a legitimate question.

Thread responds negatively for no apparent reason.

quagmire02 is the asshole!

this stuff is right at $10/glass: http://www.amazon.com/Schott-Zwiesel-Crystal-Stemware-Collection/dp/B00284AIQ2/

we received a set of 4 titanium crystal champagne flutes for our wedding, but we really haven't used them (and i don't know if they're anything special, either)

Are you looking at getting just one set of glasses for all your wine/water/whatever-drinking needs? That honestly looks like a pretty well-rounded set.

I have a cheap version pretty similar and I like them http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3596228

well, i was thinking we'd get something like one set of burgundy glasses and a set of white wine glasses

and then get some everyday glasses like these (which are more like $6.50/glass): http://www.amazon.com/Schott-Zwiesel-Convention-Collection-Beverage/dp/B002ACOQ4M/

see, i'm wondering if we just have some that are too dainty...obviously restaurants are better off with heavier, thicker glasses so that they're not as prone to breakage and can be used with high-temp dishwashers

the ones you linked to might be a better option

you should get some of those stemless riedel O glasses. I've seen them at a prominent Tdubber's house and they are quite classy, work as well as stemware and you'll be less likely to klutz them out of existence.
[link]http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.amazon.com/Riedel-Stemless-Glass-Complete-Collection/dp/B0002Z290M[/link] here's a set of 12 mixed

crystal and stemware should never go in a dishwasher. its easy to wash by hand, drop of soap in the empty glass (preferably before the wine dries and leaves a crust), lots of hot water, rub the rim so there's no lipstick marks, dry off and store

i realize "traditional" crystal stemware should not, but that's why i brought up the titanium type that is specifically designed so that it can be used in a dishwasher...i don't necessarily mind spending money on quality things, but at $10/glass it should be dishwasher safe

Just go to Crate & Barrel. The glassware is relatively inexpensive and your wife will be dripping wet by the time you leave just for agreeing to take her there. It's a win win.

I'M the one breaking them

mostly the stems, but a couple of bowls, too...all of them from what i would consider fairly insignificant clinks

are they all from the same place, or different glasses from different places?

different glasses from different places...some target/walmart ones which seem to break the most often (for obvious reasons) and some mid-grade department store (like macy's, i guess?) ones that break less often but i still manage to shatter or snap from time to time

I guess you need to learn how to properly how a wine glass??

I was going to suggest quality stemware, but I think you will break it.
