The closest free equivalents are the GIMP and Paint.NET

Why yes, good sir, I have a copy of a $1000 piece of software right here for you. It's just down at the end of this alley. Follow me. Oh don't mind them, they're just some friends of mine.

99.9% of the people downloading photoshop are hack jobs that use just a fraction of it's power - all they need is Paint.net or something like Lightroom.

Do the professional users a favor and at least buy the academic/teacher edition so we can stop paying $texas.

It's only $200 for CS5 Extended with the education discount. It doesn't get much better than that considering what you get.

I have no idea what you're going to use it for but GIMP will probably be plenty and is free.

actually no, almost a week ago Mr E Nigma made a thread in Chit Chat asking about finding some old version of Photoshop that had "gone open-source" for his new laptop, and then I told him the surprisingly easy and hack-free way to pirate it, and then Noen got mad at me so I asked qntmfred to remove the piracy info. and then he moved the thread to the Trash Bin

anyway like Joie my greatest excitement is about content-aware image resizing and fill
even though I haven't yet used that, and the main reason to get Photoshop is that Paint.net and the GIMP don't work perfectly with all PSD files
