My current receiver is over heating. It's either not being adequately cooled or something is causing it to operate above normal temp...Works fine for simple gaming, low volume activities. Auto-shuts off in about 30min with music (good safety feature).
Any Raleigh/Cary recommendations or can someone here fix?
Thanks 11/29/2010 3:20:01 PM |

Did you try the simple stuff like making sure theres no dust in the vents or something covering them?
is there a visible fan? is it spinning?
is it under warranty? 11/29/2010 3:26:19 PM |

Blow it out with compressed air, make sure all the vents are exposed (ie you dont have your xbox or vcr on top of it. 11/29/2010 3:26:29 PM |

Appreciate it...Blew it all out. Im pretty good about blowing compressed air across it once every 2 months or so...nothing is blocking it....i didn't notice a fan (never heard one spinning)..ill have to look at it when I get home to check on the fan...it's noticeably hotter..glad the auto-shut off kicked in b4 it really caused some damage..No warranty

Are you sure there's no warranty? There's a factory warranty on receivers for like 2 years, i think. Even if you bought it off a guy instead of in a store, as long as it's less than 2 years old you can still send it off.

No problem.
What's your setup? I've wanted to graduate from my POS hometheaterinabox to a real sound system, but cant ever decide on components. 11/29/2010 4:16:52 PM |

^honestly nothing too special...it's the Onkyo HT-S6100 7.1 package i bought Feb 09....
Great sounding system straight out of the box....I am going to modify the sub over Christmas break and replace it with a better 8" driver...

I will throw a +1 out there for Onkyo, simply for the Audyssey self-calibration/room correction. Right out of the box you can use it and tweak it a bit, but the difference after having it self calibrate is like night and day. It's definitely a great budget system that is super easy to set up yourself. 11/29/2010 4:44:48 PM |

I have the HT-S6200 HTIB. My subwoofer conked out when I moved, took it to the Onkyo service center (fortunately there's one here in town, otherwise I would have had to pay to ship it to Colorado!). Fix took them 3 1/2 weeks, they essentially replaced the whole thing.
These recievers are all passive cooled, no internal fans.
How much room do you have around the reciever? And is it in an open cabinet?
The manual says to give it at least 4 inches of space above the unit, and it should be in an open cabinet. If you have it in a closed A/V cabinet, or have anything on top of it, it will overheat and shut down with a quickness. I bought a 120mm fan and installed it in the back of my entertainment center so I could have it closed off but still provide adequate ventilation.
Also throw in a +1 for the HTIB's from Onkyo. Having a true powered subwoofer and 7.1 with HDMI for under 400 bucks is a good deal 11/29/2010 5:11:48 PM |

I, too, have an onkyo htib and was advised not to get a htib. But I've been very happy with it and it sounds damn good. 11/29/2010 6:27:06 PM |

If you want a closed cabinet to hide everything. This.
I run cheap fans at 5 volts and they keep equipment as cool or cooler than when it was on an open rack and are whisper quiet at that speed.11/29/2010 6:55:06 PM |

Yea it's in an open glass unit. Plenty of air flow. Xbox sits beside it with about a 6" gap and PS3 is on a different shelf.
The closest service center is MI or FL . However, taking a promotion in January in Clearwater, FL and there just happens to be a service center there. So I won't have to ship it...ftmfw...
And yes +2 for Onkyo HTIB's...the paper woofer is it's only downfall...
Has anyone replaced the stock woofer with a new sub (kept the same enclosure)? If so any recommendations?11/30/2010 8:29:00 AM |
