I'm about to check this place out tonight. Family is from Philly so I'm pretty picky about my cheesesteaks but this seems pretty legit. The one thing that really makes it seem like it's going to be authentic is the fact that he imports birch beer from PA, which I've never seen outside of PA.

In Philly you typically have a choice of Whiz or provolone. I hate Cheese Whiz too.

I think an authentic Philly is always assumed to be ribeye minute steak, green peppers, white onions with provolone melted on while it's still on the grill on a hoagie. no lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, mushrooms, etc. unless you ask for it.

I also think the greasier the grill the better. The sidewalk vendors typically have the best ones because they get the most traffic.

/cheesesteak blog.

I'll take some pictures with my camera phone if I remember. I'm about to go check it out, stay tuned for a review lol

If I check this place out (I live right down the road) and try to get a cheesesteak without the cheese, will the owner serve me or will he tell me I've come to the wrong establishment?

A ClassicMixup, as it were.

Just got back from there a few minutes ago. I liked the interior because of all the Philadelphia stuff, Eagles, Phillies, etc. and the people were very friendly and I loved the birch beer.

However, I didn't really like the cheesesteaks very much. I and the people I went with couldn't really taste any cheese. Maybe ordering double cheese could have improved this. Also, I thought that the meat was a bit dry, which probably indicates that they used a nice, leaner cut of meat but I prefer the greasy, cheap meat that makes a Philly a Philly.

This was better than say Sammy's or something like that but doesn't come close to Phillies in North Raleigh or Ruckus in quality. Phillies is the best but Ruckus makes a damn good cheesesteak when you take off the tomatoes, lettuce and mayo that normally comes on it.

Don't let me put you off from eating there as the people are very nice (and even stayed open a little later because we called about the snow affecting closing time) and its a very Philly feeling restaurant but for the cheesesteak itself, there are better in Raleigh.

^ Best Cheesesteaks in Crossroads in Cary is the absolute best that I can think of at the moment. Had an amazing Philly cheesesteak in Philly back in 2003.

That place is absolute garbage. I would honestly say it is not even on par with Subway. If you're in that area just go to Penn Station at Capital/Spring Forest.

Curse you all for putting me in the mood for a cheesesteak. I live super close so I just ran out and got one.

It's really good, but I agree that it's not greasy enough like the stereotypical cheesesteak should be. I'd eat there again though.

Don't try too many cheesesteaks in these parts anymore. Tired of being disappoint.
I used to love Zero's in Chapel Hill but that is gone.

But the best one I've tried recently on strong recommendation from people who lived in Philly is
Big City Bagels and More on Six Forks. Sliced ribeye, onions and whiz.
Pretty damn good even though I do prefer provolone.

I just ate here two nights ago at TWW's recommendation. Sandwich was weak and overpriced. The steak was of decent quality, I'll give them that, but they weren't very generous with it or the actual peppers and onions. The cheese was good but there wasn't much of it.

I would eat here if it was cheaper. However, $7 dollars for an -okay- cheesesteak is just not acceptable. If you want Utz bagged chips and a fountain drink it's 2.50 more. Basically, a meal here is going to cost you $10--if the meager cheesesteak fills you up. I took a group with me and no one was particularly full, which was surprising. The group also reflected similar opinions, though they were more outraged at the prices than I was (it's only fringe Cary though, so maybe I shouldn't expect inflated prices).

So if you're really craving a philly and you live nearby, go for it if you want to. I don't know many alternatives in the area, but I still wouldn't recommend Anvil's. For the record, the guy seemed cool, but the woman (not sure if it was his wife or what) was pretty bitchy.

^^Well, most of the people reviewing restaurants and food on TWW are upper-20s young professionals with enough money to not care how much something costs, and anything with even modest flavor seems like a gourmet meal after their lives are sapped by the day to day grind of the work force.
