which do you prefer?

in high school, i was pencil-only. never used pens, and was almost afraid of using pens (probably a commitment phobia thing). i had a mechanical pencil i really liked, and when it got discontinued i even called the manufacturer to order an extra box

shortly after that i somehow became pen only, and have never looked back.

Why would anyone be pencil only unless they had an engineer/architecture type job where they had to drawings with a lot of corrections that needed erasing??

I still like a mechanical pencil, but for the most part, pen!

especially these:

oh and the Pilot G2 as mentioned above

I prefer a standard BIC pen. More often than not, I have one stuck behind my ear

In IB, the students are required to take their final exams in black ink. In my class they have to do all work that is to be submitted in black ink. If they make a mistake, they put 1 X through it and continue working.

i swear this thread was made not too long ago b/c i remember posting about my writing tools.

in school i was 100% pen all the time. Now my job has me at 80% Pencil or colored pencil and 20% Pen.

Pencil - Bic mechanical
Pen - Zebra Sarasa. The best gel rollerball pen ever.

I write better with pencils but I am a snob for both. I've been known to ninja both pens and pencils from folks if they write well. Haha.

I used to use pencils a lot more, and then I'd go back through my legal pads and find my notes all smudged to shit.

I normally stick with pens now...the G2's are nice...I have a uniball that I bought (and then couldn't use) for the bar exam that's been my mainstay for a few months:

Pencils are definitely for architects and commitment phobes.

I always have at least four pens on me at all times: a black ink pen, a red ink pen, a pink ink pen and a fine point black sharpie. The black is for general communications. The red is for proofreading. And the pink is for 2nd-round proofreading. Additionally, I keep a fine point sharpie on me for times when I want to be very obnoxious in written communications.

Red is much more legible. And it screams "EPIC FAILURE/PLZ TO FIX" ... very important when an error means the difference between an A and a B ... or between a revenue-generating communication and a potential cease-and-desist letter.

Pilot G2's are awesome pens. That is only pen I've ever used where I actually ran it out of ink and wanted to buy a refill.

Pens all the way...when I do use a pencil, I rarely ever use mechanical pencils. I prefer the regular wooden ones.

Pens only, and only this pen. Best ever, except that they're more prone to exploding after a while than most. But the writing is unsurpassed.

Depends, but usually pen. They gave me this really nice pen at work.... and though it does make me feel like a douchebaggy corporate tool when I write with it, it really does feel good in my hand, it's heavy, and it writes well. I use this most of the time:

But, sigh, there is some work where it just doesn't make sense to use a pen. So for some of the drafting, schematics, prototype concept drawings, etc.... I use a pencil.

Another +1 for Pilot G2, only pens I buy. .07mm preferred, will settle for .05mm. Black, not blue.

back in high school and early college, i used to be #2 wooden pencil only

but after a while pencil just falls off the pages in the sketchbook

so now it's almost exclusively:

on the rare occasions that i still do "proper" ink work (i have a wacom, so the pen has been somewhat outmoded), i use:

i usually tear the dickens out of the tips of those things well before the ink runs dry because i press pretty fucking hard

I feel your pain man...there are certain pens that I cannot write with because of the angle I hold the pen and it ends up just digging into the paper

I mean i like fancy $100-$500 pens but i'll lose them and my junk is large enough that i don't need to compensate.
