the fact that people think they're making a difference by changing their profile pic is laughable
it'd be one thing if you changed your status to link to a local charity or told a story how child violence has affected you but thats not fun so lets put up Darkwing Duck instead and hope billy's dad doesn't come home drunk again

Also, the argument that "changing your profile picture does nothing" is funny to me. I am betting that 100% of people that bitch about this know what the meaning of the picture change is. And seeing as how the idea is to raise awareness, I am pretty sure that this campaign succeeded rather exceptionally.

my counter to that argument would be a) nobody should be pro-child violence and b) you probably haven't forgotten it goes on in the world unless you're completely selfish

raising awareness for this is like raising awareness that people shouldn't be mean, it's illusory

i guarantee it's a self-esteem booster (i'm helping too!) more than a successful campaign

how does 'raising awareness' help?

people always talk about how wonderful it is to raise awareness. How did all of those NFL players wearing pink help breast cancer victims? Do people really believe that breast cancer and child abuse are new ideas for people? Who are these people that aren't aware of child abuse or breast cancer or [insert typical 'raise awareness' cause here]?

Are these cave dwelling people who somehow don't know about these things also specially equipped to solve these problems?

Raising awareness doesn't mean just saying "oh, this is for child abuse!" Raising awareness would be putting something like this as your profile picture and some real statistics:



Followed by *real* ways people can help (like volunteering or donating clothes, toiletries, money, etc, to a shelter) with links, numbers, and addresses to local (or national) shelters and hotlines.


Just because you throw in the words "child abuse" doesn't mean people are aware of how prevalent it is or aware of the ways they can help.

But anyway, that's the last thing I'm going to say on this shit because I already got in a FB debate with some people over it.

This is how "marketing" works. You see all the controversy about this, or people discussing it like in this thread, which plants the seed.

Then at some point later, you are going to see someone collecting money for abused kids, or a similar cause, and instead of glossing over it like you normally would, this FB bullshit sticks in your brain, and you perhaps donate some money or time or whatever.

Despite its banality, the campaign has worked, and is most likely going to result in a net positive, however small, compared to if the campaign didn't exist.
