Or do you even think about this at all?

Skwinkle, have you ever put together a vision board or documented your Smart Goals and stretch goals? That's a good way to get started.

I have not. Because my problem at the moment is not knowing what I want my goals to be, not that I am unsure if I can reach them.

...in a year? Becoming the youngest VP in the company's history.
...in 5 years? In a penthouse apartment on Madison Avenue. My stock options are incredible, and my yacht and helicopter are almost completely paid off.
...in 10 years? Broke and alone, bitching on TWW.

^^ Sometimes you just have to start small and then build from there. Or define the parts of your life in which you have goals, then mold other parts to help support the smaller goals.

^ Nice

...in a year? In a committed relationship with an awesome guy. Launching my own business. Publishing my first novel. Possibly celebrating some of that with a trip to South or Central America with that special guy.
...in 5 years? Living permanently in Central or South America with the same awesome guy, running a consulting business and still writing.
...in 10 years? Writing and running a business in Central or South America. Possibly raising a couple of children.

In a year - Serving as trial counsel for the 2d or 3d Infantry Division, stationed in either Fort Lewis, WA or Fort Stewart GA. New dog to keep me company and help me get used to the new location.

In 5 years - Either out of the Army and living back in NC (hopefully married and settled down at that point), possibly practicing in the federal system, or under a new contract and serving at a new base-ideally either Bragg (close to home), or in Germany.

In 10 years - Starting to raise a kid or two, possibly approaching the point where I have to decide whether I want to serve my full 20 years with the Army and get retirement, or move onto other things.

I hate this question. you never know.
Maybe you people have boring predictable lives, but I don't. so I don't try to predict it.

It's not about predictability. It's about aspiring to reach your goals. Obviously, goals should be reshaped as your life changes, but it's nice to have them.

^^^ There's no reason not to have some general, ideal outcome at the end of a given point in time.

That doesn't mean you'll take some predictable, boring ass arc to get there. And besides, if your goal is something that's exciting to you personally, who gives a fuck?

If you'd asked me the same question at the start of college, I'd have had the 5 year goal that I ultimately reached earlier this year. It was still a great ride getting to this point, and I in no way could've predicted the bumps that came along the way to reaching it.

My goals continue to evolve and I continue to fall short.

Right now my goal is a million dollars by 30.

Fat chance.

Plan A
...in a year?Working as a consultant, traveling too much, and experiencing tension in the relationship during my first year of work.
...in 5 years? In the midst of suffering through law school, married, broke, and happy to be headed in the career direction I've always aspired to.
...in 10 years?Working as a personal finance planner/tax lawyer in a partnership.

Plan B
...in a year?Working as a consultant, traveling too much, and experiencing tension in the relationship during my first year of work.
...in 5 years?Leaving the company after some management experience for a much higher-paying upper level management position in a financial services company.
...in 10 years?Working as a personal finance planner with some college buds.

This makes me think of the movie Sliding Doors.

Funny how your life can take you down such different paths. And everything can depend on just one decision, like moving to a new state. Or going back to school.

Now I want to write a plan B.

Did you read his Plan A and Plan B? They're like precisely the same thing except one involves law school and the other doesn't.

And law school is pretty life-changing.

...in a year? About to start my last semester of my Master's, writing my thesis hopefully. Will be accepted into a Ph.D. program. Hopefully engaged to my boo.
...in 5 years? Married, picked up a dog, working on finishing up that Ph.D. in some other state.
...in 10 years? Plan A is working in a captive breeding program in a major U.S. zoo. Plan B is working in a research lab and/or teaching at a university.

Yeah, it is if you change your life because of it.

Like leave personal finance to become a human rights advocate or to write legal thrillers.

This guy's just adding tax lawyer on to personal finance.

That is not some drastically different path, a la Sliding Doors. Furthermore, if you plan it out five years in advance, the awe and wonder of "different paths" isn't so magical. He's not missing a train...he's making a calculated decision to go to law school so he can be more marketable in the same field.

And you're like, "Man, life's so funny how it works out sometimes!"
