at least it's not Kannapolis.
but in all seriousness..it's 45 minutes from Charlotte, 45 minutes from the Triad. Home of Cheerwine, headquarters of Food Lion. Traffic is going to be a bitch there on 85 for the next 3 years as they try to replace the bridge over the river just north in Spencer. I'll think of more later. ] 12/7/2010 8:58:01 PM |

Salisbury is, in all honesty,a nice little town. I guess it depends on what you are into. There is nothing particularly exciting about it, but there are a few good bars and restaurants popping up around the downtown area.
I grew up there, but let a woman trick me into moving up the road to Lexington. I plan to sell my house in the next year, and move back to Salisbury to be closer to family and friends.
You mind me asking where you are looking to work? 12/7/2010 9:12:42 PM |

^^^thanks. that's the idea i get. I live/work in kind of a small, crappy town now, but its like 20 minutes from where i grew up and i have a lot of friends here. It's cool that Salisbury's near Charlotte, even though I've never been too fond of it.
They want me to come in for an interview regarding a sportswriting position at the Salisbury Post. I understand high school sports are pretty big there. Catawba is there, too.

It's a great little town; about 20-30 minutes to anywhere you'd want to be; AAAANNNDD they just got a HUGE grant to install municipal internet. It's supposed to be similar to U-Verse level service (IP TV/phone/50Mbit internets.) 12/7/2010 9:38:04 PM |

I grew up in Salisbury and am home for Christmas now. The place sucked growing up, but after traveling around and working in other small southern towns I've actually come to appreciate it. It is a very old and historic town and there is actually a growing number of tourists coming to shop and visit the sites/museums. For a small southern town there is a lot of money here. Mostly due to cheerwine, food lion and older textile mills. All the money has allowed us to keep the town in good shape and develop in a progressive, but controlled fashion. The city just hooked up fiber optic internet for homes and businesses, there are several good bars downtown, there are several projects going on right now to renovate apartments and condos above these bar areas. The downtown area has also become home to a number of art galleries and craft places. We also have dozens of great BBQ joints, all the fast food chains, and dozens more local eateries. As for sports, it's a pretty big deal. This weekend we have Salisbury High, West Rowan and Davie County all in the state football championships. Charlotte is a 45 min drive as is Mooresville and Winston Salem. The mountains are a 2hour drive and High Rock Lake and Lake Norman are nearby. Outside of the city though, it's pretty bum fuck and white trash abounds!
Overall, it's a nice quiet small southern town with a little progressive movement going on. You can live here in peace, enjoy the quaintness of the town and the friendly people and then head off to one of the bigger cities for shopping/ partying etc.....
Hope that helps! 12/9/2010 12:18:14 AM |

I grew up there too. Pretty much what everyone else said. It's pretty small and not exciting at all. Everyone there knows each other and their families knew each other etc. A lot of people grow up there and never leave. Being as I moved there when I was little this was one thing I didn't like about it at all. It's definitely growing though. I didn't know about the bridge over the Yadkin being redone but that was something that absolutely NEEDED to be fixed even though it's gonna suck. They expanded 85 to 4 lanes on each side though and it's pretty much exactly halfway between Charlotte and Greensboro so it's got the infrastructure to explode as soon as that bridge gets done. Kinda close to actual cities but far enough away where you don't get most of the negative stuff. TONS of cops in the city limits so they get bored pretty easily. My username aside I can't say I've had good experiences with them ever. Good place to raise a family though.
Sports are a pretty big deal there. I know my high school West Rowan won the state 3A football championship like 2 years ago. Some awesome athletes came out of that school. Scooter Sherrill, Wade Moore broke every running record in the county and then KP Parks smashed them a few years later. West Rowan won the basketball state championship a few years in a row going like 60-0 over that time. North Rowan has produced a few top class track and field athletes. And the entire county is obsessed with baseball. That's just high school. If you're going there to be a sportswriter there will be no shortage of work.
Also, MOTHER FUCKING HAPS. Salisbury Post office is like 2 blocks away. 12/9/2010 1:36:32 AM |

You're gonna get fat eating at Haps every lunch, but it'll be worth it The town, as a few people have already said, is much better these days. If you're into music at all there's a bit of it here, otherwise expect to drive to Charlotte. The stretch of I-85 between Kannapolis and Concord is absolutely full of retards, rubbernecking, and traffic. Otherwise, it's not so bad. The historic district is pretty nice, but if you're not into that you can walk a couple blocks and buy some crack. Tons of options here. (I really like the town though, seriously) 12/9/2010 8:02:36 AM |

Nice town...I've heard it referred to as Smallsbury, but mostly by a couple people I knew who went to Catawba College there.
My reserve unit was down in Concord, and that area isn't bad...I-85 makes it pretty easy to commute from wherever, and Charlotte is close enough for easy weekend trips. 12/9/2010 9:14:58 AM |

I used to work in Salisbury. The only thing there is strip malls and chain restaurants as far as the eye can see. There was also a pretty dank old school country restaurant in the gas station near the farm I was working on, but you'd gain 400 pounds if you ate there regularly. 12/9/2010 2:59:12 PM |

When my family lived in Lexington in the early 90s, we used to frequent Salisbury often to sell stuff (mostly antiques) at the indoor/outdoor flea market most Saturdays. Pretty sure it isn't there anymore, but I think it was right before you got to the bridge over the Yadkin going southbound on 85.
Other than that, I don't remember to much about the place other than spotting a replica of the Ghostbusters car at some auto shop in town (had a few broken windows, but I still was fascinated!).
