http://www.indyweek.com/indyweek/abortion-protesters-target-enloe-high-school/Content?oid=1866434

I think it's kind of bs that any organization can be doing this at a public grade school, regardless of its affiliation.

Quote :
"The protesters distributed material from a Minnesota nonprofit, the Human Life Alliance, including a pamphlet called "Did You Know?" targeted at African-American students. "Abortion is the leading cause of death among African Americans," the alliance website reads. "'Did You Know?' is shattering the silence of this great tragedy.""

I'd love to know where they came up with that statistic

I like how the school "let" the kids approach the protesters. They were off of school grounds technically, so technically those kids could do whatever they want on that sidewalk regardless of what the school thought.

Sooo . . . yeah. Seems legit to me.

Look, these guys sound like rank assholes, but read the f-n story before you run your mouth.

I went to Enloe and look back on it fondly, but the fact of the matter is that the student body is full of teen-age activist children of rich-white suburbanites who, in the absence of any real oppression, are always looking for a reason to be offended.

i haven't read the article, but maybe it was during school hours? aside from that I seem to remember some shit about not being able to cross the road of the high school back in the day due to some technicality where the school either did or didn't own that property

Yeah, it was meant for you. I just find it too cluttered to put the arrows and text in a row.

But seriously, the studies are serious business, and the studies say that people who advocate abortions are trying to kill off all black people, doncha know.

^^A highish number of black pregnancies are terminated with abortion.

Some people within the black community view this as a concerted effort to control their population. And I believe they could find some specific instances where there were some racially motivated, overly zealous abortion clinics. Of course, the clinics probably see it as helping black women escape a cycle of poverty and abuse, not thinning their herd.

Presently, I believe family planning clinics and whatnot are very, very hands-off when it comes to the women they treat. We have a long, shameful history with eugenics, and most of the people in women's health that I've met are super sensitive to that.

(Abortion protestors just pretend to care about this stuff and use it for their political purposes.)

In all seriousness, if you consider abortion a cause of death, then yes, abortion is the leading cause of death among African Americans. And, besides obnoxious groups like these, most folks are pretty darn silent about it.

Here's the most screwed up part of the literature they handed out:

Quote :
"Among these magazines is one that was handed out by protesters at Enloe with articles titled "Just for Girls" and "Just for Guys." The articles advocate sexual abstinence, advising girls "to dress modestly" to "protect and assist the guys in your life who want to remain abstinent." Dressing seductively, Olson said, knowingly invites temptation.

The articles targeting guys contend that viewing pornography can lead to sex addictions, and one article compares men's sexuality to dogs reacting to a bell. Olson defended the articles as "good scientific research," but Enloe student Jackson Bloom said it is "disgusting" to compare men to animals incapable of controlling themselves."

^It's funny.

But the literature they're passing out is disturbing. It's reinforcing precisely the same attitudes that lead young people to get pregnant in the first place. "Girls, don't dress provocatively cause boys are crazy horndogs! And it's your job to temper their lusts! Good luck, kids!"

^No, but it does include a "touching" story about an 18-year-old who became pregnant after she was raped. Her dad kicked her out of the house, and she was "homeless, jobless, motherless, penniless, pregnant, and alone." The only thing keeping her going was the beautiful life growing inside her! She committed herself to purity and married a great guy who loves her and her child!

On condoms, their handy pamphlet explains: "Condoms are the least effective form of birth control and frequently are misused or break. The longer teens use condoms, the less likely they are to continue using them every time."

Their advice to girls on shots and pills? "Many teens quit using the shots and pills because of side effects. These include: weight gain, depression, acne, and irregular bleeding. In addition, the pill doesn't always work by preventing pregnancy. About 4-11% of the time it interferes with implantation (when the baby tries to implant in the uterus). Implantation happens 5-9 days after fertilization. The pill blocks this implantation by thinning the lining of the womb, consequently aborting the baby."

Thanks so much, Dr. Mary Paquette, for giving our kids some straight talk on sex!

AHA, after all that crap, the magazine actually has the nerve to tell girls, "You are a human being who deserves to be treated with dignity and respect..."

From nbccongress.org

Quote :
"Do you know what the leading cause of death in the African American Community since 1973 is? Think about it for a minute. Is it heart disease-2,266,789 deaths since 1973, cancer-1,638,350, or accidents-370,723? Is it AIDS-203,695, or violent crimes-306, 313? There is one possibility that is often overlooked. It happens 1452 times a day in our community. It has taken over 13 million Black lives within the last 30 years. It has taken 1/3 of our present population. What is it? ABORTION! "

From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22689931/ns/health-womens_health/

Quote :
"Since Jan. 22, 1973, there have been roughly 50 million abortions in the United States, and more than one-third of adult women are estimated to have had at least one. "

Assuming each black woman had only one. 50M *.353 = ~17.5 M

From http://www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts.htm

Quote :
"In 2006, 631,636 people died of heart disease. Heart disease caused 26% of deaths—more than one in every four—in the United States"

Assuming a constant percentage over the same period since 1973

631,636 * 35 years * .258 = 5.7M

Not a Statistician so take with a grain of salt or less.

I can explain the "logic" behind their statistic without even looking anything up.

I've read that, over the years, somewhere between one out of four and one out of four African-American pregnancies end in abortion. So, between 25% and 33%. Now, I've also read that heart disease is responsible for 25% of African-American deaths. But let's say it's 30% just to make the example really clear.

If it's 30% for heart disease and 25% for abortion, then normal folks like us would say, "30 is bigger than 25, so heart disease accounts for more."

But they would say, "Noooooo, your 30% statistic is out of the number of black people who are born, not out of the number of actual black lives! You have to include the pregnancies that were terminated!"

Basically, the instant you consider abortion a "cause of death," all the numbers related to other causes of death take a dramatic dip, and abortion comes out as leading cause of death.
