Who does this?

I did it back in high school when I was working shit jobs but I haven't done it at the 50+ places I have submitted applications to while looking for a big boy job. I would just feel weird calling companies with massive HR departments and asking about the status of my Resume.

Do you just give them your reference number? (I should probably stop trashing those e-mails)
What else do you say?

I normally hit submit at the same time I hit send, then I ask whoever answers the phone if I have a job yet.

I've called after an interview before. But I had a HR rep. to call who was recruiting me.

I didn't have to call my HR recruiter. Butch Davis and his cronies called me everyday.

Follow up calls is how I've gotten every job...ever. Do it. Otherwise, you look like you're in middle school.

At the end of the interview, I thought it was customary to ask if you can call them for a follow up on a certain day around a certain time. That way it is not weird and you don't seem desperate but proactive. Also, thank you notes go a long way.

just opinions, I guess.

i definitely do it.

i'm pretty sure i've seen it used as a weeding out process.

also that i've heard of the HR dept losing a resume and want someone for a job but could not reach them

you get to talk to people by doing research and being persistent

if you really want the job, see if you can volunteer for a month to see if you like it

you're not getting paid anyway..

maybe you'll get a foot in the door?

I have hired lesser qualified candidates only because they made follow-up calls to me

it shows you really want the job

^^ I've actually started doing that, that's how desperate I've become But the problem is most of the places I'm wanting to work are under hiring freezes right now so I'm probably SOL for a few more months.

^ After the interview correct? I know most HR departments won't even talk to you about your resume if it's just in the submittal stage.

this.

absolutely follow up at every step of the process, in any way you can. you have to separate yourself from the pack. I've made hiring decisions based on this. I've been hired, myself, based on this.

you need to be aware of the difference between "enthusiastic and persistent" versus "freakishly obsessive stalker". if you can't discern that line, no one here can help you.

^^ well yeah, usually. but it still shows major initiative if you call to check on the status of your resume.

I hired a guy mainly because he bothered me so much checking on the status of the hiring process. He has ended up being the best employee I have, but I would not have hired him based on his resume alone.

yes, definitely after the interview. make sure you get a contact for the people who interview you.

if you can, do so even before the interview. if you have a hiring manager's contact, this is better. if not, even a call to HR may help. if it's a nameless, faceless automated process, it might not make any difference. but it can only help, not hurt, your chances.

Most of the time, it is acceptable and appropriate for you to call in between steps in the process once. If you call more than once and you weren't asked to, then I think it becomes a bit annoying (though djeternal had a different experience with that - but this is just my take on it).

You submit your resume. If you don't hear back in say a week or two - give them a call to make sure they've got it and it has been submitted to the appropriate people for review. If it's a big corporation - they have a phone number for their front desk - call and ask to be put through to the HR representative that handles new job applicants. If it has, wait for them to call you.

In my hiring processes, I haven't called back after an interview. What I did do is grabbed a card of the interviewee and emailed them a couple of days later to thank them for their time and possibly recap a few things with some extended information in a well thought out manner. My goal with that is to get everything said that I wanted to say in without them having to stop their day to listen. They can check the email at their convenience.

This post has me thinking I'm going to email the coordinator of a position I applied for a few weeks ago to show I'm still interested in the position. What's the best way to go about wording the email that shows I'm interested in the job but I'm not begging for the job? I know there's a fine line there but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to begin the email/what I should include in it.
