i hate it.

I can tell when it's coming. you don't hear from them for a few months, then bam!

They call me a month ahead of time "hey man lets hang out". Grab some beers, talk the shit, watch football. 2 weeks later - "yo man im moving, need some help".

As long as they only need help moving things that are already packed.

I hate getting to the place only to find out that there is still shit not in a box or beds/dressers not taken apart.

this problem is amplified if you have a truck or other large vehicle.

I don't mind it at all as long as they aren't someone who is only looking for help and never offering their own. This kind of stuff usually evens itself out over time between friends.

I was like this until this past year when I basically had to move my girlfriend's entire apartment into her new house. She had a really tough situation where she had to move everything out one day/night and everything in the next morning. And she's a special needs teacher so its always impossible for someone to fill in for her so she couldn't take the day off. So I loaded up (to the fucking top, and had to squeeze shit in to shut the door) a 17' Uhaul truck by myself, and then unloaded the whole thing the next day. Then had to help her friend move all her shit out of storage and into the same house later on that day. I had trouble walking or lifting anything for the rest of that week and some nice back pain for a month as well.

Fuck moving.

i help them move willingly provided they give me a decent bit notice and not pull a "hey man i'm moving tomorrow, you're gonna help out because i helped you that time a long time ago right?"

but i agree that if they don't get their shit in boxes i'm not helping them pack it there.

if my stuff isn't in a box when they're over its cause i'll get it later after i get room and time to figure out if i'm gonna toss it

i hate calling friends that have trucks cause i know they have to get bugged all the damn time about it. so i will either stick to renting a truck or hiring movers in the future

If someone is down to pay in either texa$ or beer, I don't mind lending my truck to the cause.

on the plus side, having moved so many things, I know how to do it very efficiently, so it gets done quicker. And if they are willing to pay for gas and maybe buy me a meal or something, then i have no problem doing it (I'm not a small dude, so moving stuff isn't too big of a hassle, other than the time it takes)

My roommate and I helped a friend move over the summer. We only helped her move out b/c she was moving to Charlotte, so we just loaded the truck. Her parents were so grateful for our help that they gave us $40 each and $30 for gas. And had breakfast food waiting for us.

I wouldn't have asked for anything but it was definitely appreciated

haha the one thing I don't like anymore is people getting me beer for the move... I'll take it when I'm done, but I can't enjoy a good beer while I move anymore (I used to be able to, but I'm getting old and the ol' body can't multitask like that anymore )

this is pretty much what happened to my coworker when she showed up to help me move. luckily she is really into organization, being a leader, and getting things done quickly.

Exactly. I mean I get the whole helping people thing, especially if they are just out of college and flat broke. But if you can easily afford movers, it gets to be a lot like asking a friend to come over and help wash your car for you so that you don't have to take it to the car wash.

Asking friends to help you move is unacceptable after age 30. It starts getting iffy around age 25, but at 30 I draw the line.

I just recently helped a friend move from a 3rd story apartment to another 3rd story apartment. I'm pretty sure that was the closest to death I've ever been
