But with nuclear warheads preset with timed explosives, you could have an effective explosive area of 27 cells... (3x3x3 explosion, to clarify)

in that case, a 12x12x12 grid would make the game last just as long... (64 shots to "sweep" the entire playing area)

not really. think about scouts or our furthest possible flight vehicles. they don't come near being weaponized to our full capabilities. Imagine if the mars roer was attacked by cavemen today. it wouldn't be able to put up much of a fight and it would take years for us to respond.
