I walked in today and they have torn everything up, the shelves are all empty and then the guy kicked me out and locked the door behind me.

Anyone know if it's remodeling, or closed?

I <3 Laziz Biryani inside, their food is fantastic

The landlord upped the rent $4k a month so they closed shop. He now runs the gas station at the corner of Old Stage Rd. and Ten Ten in South Raleigh/Garner. Nice guy, he remembered me even though I was far from a regular customer.

To clarify, the rent was not $4k a month; the landlord increased the rent by $4k. At the moment there is no restaurant and I was in a hurry so I didn't really have time to ask what he had planned for the rest. I'm pretty sure they are opening a salon where Stage Road Hairstyling was, which is ironic since Stage Road Hairstyling had to move due to increased rent.

This sucks, I ate their all the time. Fucking landlord...

I also liked the guy who worked there, and found it very entertaining that he also moonlighted at at least one other place on Hillsborough (Dunkin Donuts).

The dude who run Go Pack was nice. He helped me remove a splinter from my finger once with some tweezers he was selling in his store.

I offered to buy the tweezers after he pulled the splinter out but he said "don't worry about it" and threw the tweezers back in the bucket

I had the older guy there once show me the proper way to eat Indian food. He just started picking up my bread, picking up pieces of meat, and trying to hand feed me. It was funny and creepy at the same time It's sad that they're closing down

i was about to say, $4k/month rent is very very cheap for that location, but it sounded like the guy upped the rent by $4k/month. I bet he's asking $8-10

I live on Chamberlain street, the bazaar was the easiest place to go for a quick beer or whatever. If a Chipotle is going there, that's cool, but probably bad for my health.

Ha

how did you naturally think to eat the food? I’d think when you see a flat bread-like thing and some meat in a sauce, you’d always just wrap the meat in the bread...

This is horseshit, I was all about some Laziz Biryani. Ate there a couple of times a month, at least...the main guy and the lady behind the counter knew me by name. Clearly I should have upped my intake of Indian food to keep them afloat.

I've never had Chipotle and honestly their brutal annexation of one of my preferred near-campus eateries does not make me eager to start.

I suppose he didn't actually go to the meat. Instead he did what I still do at Indian places to this day -- pour the vegetarian part over the rice and use the bread to pick up a mixture of rice and whatever (probably chickpeas of some sort, haha). I ate the meat separately.

Back when I used to take Lent really seriously and abstained from meat and dairy, I probably went there a couple of times a week and followed this procedure to make my vegetarian diet palatable.

I don't think it was a matter of not making enough money. It was an issue they had with the owner of the property. I actually have pretty direct information on the situation. The $4k increase per month was basically a big, "Fuck you." I'm sure Chipotle is going to pay more than GoPaks was paying but not that price. To be honest, it's actually going to end up costing the property owner more in the long run.

i heard the same thing from a few people, that some entity connected to jimmy john's bought the building a few years ago and the rent was jacked up to astronomical levels to make gopaks GTFO and make room for chipotle

but the folks who ran gopaks now run a much larger store at the corner of ten ten and old stage if i recall correctly, i haven't been there though

this was all covered in some thread about a month ago

It had to do with homeless people, I think. GoPaks was always selling them alcohol and whatnot. The bums haven't been eradicated but it has gotten better.

I think that place is for sale for $125k. I was looking for houses in 27607 and it was listed for sale.

AFAIK, pretty much every business that is just breaking even is listed for sale online in the hopes that some idiot with $125k in the bank will suddenly decide that he wants to abandon his successful career and instead run a convenient store that also sells indian food (or was it pakistani?).

Fun fact: the original plot of Wall Street involved just such a hostile takeover of a convenient store/ethnic to go restaurant.

A couple of points.

I know the statement was that there was an increase in the rent (or would-be future rent). But speaking in terms of the value itself, no way in the holy name of mathematics was a place like that pulling in anywhere near enough to support a base rent of $4k a month. What was that, like a 300% increase? Good God. They had dust on their merchandise and products that looked old as dirt, and their lunch client base was pathetically small - they couldn't even have had the seating to serve enough customers to turn a profit. I recognize that they might have gotten a lot from alcohol sales, but I'm not buying that either, I simply can't comprehend that being near enough volume and margin...

Anything in the neighborhood of $4k/month rent on a $125k property sounds pretty bogus.

Last time I went in there I was thinking about how nice the granite bathroom stall dividers are. Then I was wondering if I'd be able to salvage them before they tore down the building.

Then I threw up in my mouth a little bit thinking about using one as a kitchen counter and forgot about the whole idea.
