I got asked the question by my 25 year old virgin girlfriend at the time. Instead of being smart and avoiding the question, I let her guess. You don't even ask a new relationship how many people they've been with.

If you really wanna know, then you wait till you've been in the relationship a while and then ask. You will probably get a more accurate number and by then it won't really have an affect on your opinion on them...so by then you probably won't even care enough to ask.
