My grandfather's name is Lawrence Robert...we call him Bob.

My Dad wanted to name my youngest brother William Robert. My mom said they would do if as long as he promised to never call him Billy Bob. My Dad took a sip of beer, set the can down, looked at my mom and said, "We will name him John Robert."

most nicknames that are derivatives from other names don't make obvious sense.

the ones that do are more of a novelty than the rest.

I believe that is coming from "Cat" being a nickname for Catherine. My wife is named Catherine and hates "Cathy." If I shorten her name at all I call her Cat or Cath but she does have a girl at work that calls her "Kitty Cat." I would guess that's how someone named Catherine would end up going by "Kitty"

My grandfathter's name is Robert. He goes by Bob, except for people who have known him since childhood, they call him Bill. Because his mom called him Billy.

WTF

[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 1:48 PM. Reason : no, his middle name is not Bill or William.]

My birth name is 'James' but somehow I got the nickname "Douchebag".

I'm still not sure how you get one from the other.

I, too, have always wondered about that one.

This reminds me of my sophomore year in hs...a new guy transferred into our class, and as the teacher was calling out the roll on the first day of class, he spoke up (his name was James or something like that) and asked that we all call him Ferris.

The teacher asked why that name, and in the back of my mind I begged him not to say 'because of the movie' for his own sake. Almost immediately, he was like 'because I love the movie'...I think the entire class gave him a facepalm at once.

Ahaha, I remember Ferris. I thought that was his real name for pretty much all four years of high school.
