Ok all I need help. I've been apartment looking amd got some nice places picked but I can't decide where to live. Ill be working in rtp, and have places there I like but also have one place by campus I like. I can't decide which and its down to the area now. Campus is where everyone I know and what I do is by, rtp is by work ( I can walk to work from most of them.) Price is more at rtp but its not a too major consideration.

I mean- what kind of commute can you tolerate? I personally don't mind the 20-30 minute commute to work, but it is nice to be able to not have to worry about that everyday, pay for gas, etc


but moving away from your friends and local activities will really decrease how much of those you will do. you have to go to work, you don't have to go meet your friends for a couple of drinks, and that drive will affect your decisions to come back to this side of town, whether you think it will now or not. I personally would stay around south/central raleigh as long as I could unless I had to leave town all together

Yeah, the drive on I40 during the week is absolutely terrible (as everyone knows). Some of my friends (you know who you are) say they are pretty much locked down until around 7pm, and they live out in RTP.

My house is about a 10 minute drive from work and a 2.5 hour drive from campus.

I'd say live closer to friends/campus...the work week is just that, the work week....you can always do happy hour in RTP with the co-workers...but come the weekend, you don't want to drive 20min to campus area/downtown...

live closer to where you play...myself, im getting a house 3min from the beach, 15-20min from work next week when I move to Clearwater, FL (Tampa area)

Don't live in RTP. A short commute is very nice, granted, but RTP sucks. Nothing fun is there and, depending on where in RTP you are, it might even be a drive to things like grocery stores.

However, living in Raleigh and working in RTP will be traffic HELL. I go the opposite way (live in SE Durham and work on campus) and the traffic on 40 Eastbound after work every day is always bumper to bumper, dead stop. Thankfully I'm going the other way.

Have you considered living in Durham? The commute to your friends and well-known hangouts won't be that much worse than it would be going from RTP, the commute would be an easy 15-20 minutes going against the prevailing traffic, and your immediate surroundings would suck less.

I thought of this at first as well, but they have really built up the area. Theres 3 grocery stores within 5 minutes of the 3 places I like in the park, a walmart (I didnt even know they were building when I was last out there), and supposely they are building a target out there too. So theres a lot going on. Theres also a lot of trails out there which I liked to bike last time I worked there.

One of the places is on 55 smack in RTP, other is on Davis, pretty much opposite it. Third is in Morrisville on Davis.

This is kinda why I want to live by campus. Everything I do and know is here and in Raleigh. And everyone as well. Problem is I found only 1 place I liked and Ive been looking around campus for a few weeks, Ive only been looking around RTP for 3 days and found multiple places I liked. This said, the next few months Im going to be in a lot of training so its only weekends I will have to go out and do things most often. Most weeknights I wont have time or will probably be too tired to do much after work.

On 55? You're basically in Durham at that point. Might be your best option of the 3, just in terms of being close to things. Admittedly I'm not 100% familiar with the area, but Davis doesn't seem to have a whole lot going on. And Morrisville doesn't have much to recommend it on its own merit.

I'd probably go for the live near where you work option.

Which option will save you more on gas? Which option will save you more time overall?

Sure adding 20 minutes to your comute a day might not seem like a lot, but by the time you do that every weekday for a year, that is a lot of time lost that you could have used for any number of things.

I mean if you hate your job, or if its pretty temporary job, or if you hate your coworkers then being far away might be better. But I'd definitely go for whichever option would save me the most $/time overall. If you go out 7 nights a week and work 5 days a week, then go play option. If you only go out on the weekends but work 5 days a week, then go work option IMO.

v how is it that you keep running into your work people? unless you live in a boring location where there's only one shopping area for like the whole town (morrisville), you won't have that issue if you live someplace more busy. and as far as "going out on the weekends", why not just drive a little further?

I live in Cary(over by Cary HS) and work off Kitt Creek Rd. It takes me about 20 minutes to get to work and that's mostly from stop lights. Most all my friends that I hang out with regularly live within about 5 minutes of me. So I like where I live. I guess if you're talking about a 30+ minute commute it might make more sense to live closer to work. But I build in the time it takes to get to work into my day and I'd rather live closer to my friends/etc because its more convenient to get together. If I lived in Morrisville or Durham I'd probably never see them and would probably hang out with new friends I made where I lived.

I live in south Raleigh but work in south Durham. I don't mind the commute because my company does flex time and I'm given the option to work from 7-3. Definitely makes the commute 10 times easier when I'm traveling before rush hour sets in. Does your company offer that? If so then it would be worth to stay in Raleigh and commute into RTP.

I will say the only downsize is the rising gas prices. It makes me when I have to fill up every week because of the commute.

Second the "play not work" option for all sorts of reasons.

If you like hanging out with your friends regularly and they don't have a reason to drive to RTP, you'll be stuck driving to them all the time anyway.

And if "play" involves things that might prevent you from driving yourself home...well, taxis ain't getting any cheaper the farther you have to go.

I've never understood the pathological aversion to commuting, possibly because I've done so much of it in my life. Unless you're the type to get really worked up when you drive, it offers a good time to get your thoughts together before work or to decompress after it.

Eh, this way of measuring time strikes me as kinda dumb. Sure, for a person who works 40 weeks out of the year, that's around 8,000 hours. Sounds like a lot. But it isn't that, it's a bunch of twenty-minute chunks. There's not much that I do that would fit into twenty minutes, and much of what does fit into that time can be done in the car (responding to phone calls, checking the news, and the aforementioned thought-gathering/mindless decompression to music).

dude i lived near campus (gorman crossings) and worked in RTP for years. its really not a bad commute. the only way you can avoid getting on 40 to get to RTP is if you live in cary/apex and come in the back way or live in NW Raleigh and take 540 or 70. either way they all suck.

I'm going to give the opposite advice from most people. I used to live where I played, I now live where I work. it's better to make the drive once or twice on the weekends instead of every day. especially like someone pointed out, you'll have a SHITTY commute on 40 every day. If you want to visit campus after work, you'll be going the opposite direction and won't have as bad a time.

some people don't mind driving but I dislike long drives and I HATE sitting in traffic
