Is it redundant to use the suffixes -ic and -al on the same word?
ie: symmetric vs symmetrical acoustic vs acoustical
these are the only two I can think of off the top of my head, but is becoming a pet peeve of mine and I'm was wondering if I am justified in my annoyance with this one guy at work. 1/3/2011 10:09:04 PM |

Symmetrical seems more appropriate than acoustical, which I'm not sure I've ever heard. 1/3/2011 11:07:24 PM |

you can't turn acoustic into an adverb by adding -ly, but you can do so with the other two.

It depends on the word and the usage. For example, "mystic" can be used as a noun, but "mystical" is definitely an adjective. I think that generally, the -al ending makes it serve as a predicate adjective modifying a verb like be or look; so to be economical, to appear symmetrical, etc.
You can be annoyed at whoever you want, because acoustical sounds terrible. 1/4/2011 3:46:41 PM |
