long story short, a guy goes outside to take a picture of his family on new years and gets shot by a carjacker in the process.

ZERO situational awareness. Even with fireworks going off, a gunshot right next to your ear is a completely different sound. You don't even hear the sound usually, you just feel a small concussion and all of a sudden your ears are ringing.

I understand why he didn't see the killer initially, he was focused on his family and the headlights were partially blinding him. The camera flash only brought out the killers from the shadows for that brief instant. But, in my opinion, the family really had no situational awareness to not realize a gun had been fired right next to them.

They are probably more used to knife violence and probably would have been deftly aware of the sound of a switchblade bein flipped, even amongst the cracklin of the fireworks

^^ At that close of range, would it have made a difference if they did hear it right away? He'd still be dead

i thought this was a random carjacking and was feeling gvery sad.

now it's a revenge hit against a public official, and i'm not so sad.

the fact that i'm no longer sad makes me kind of sad.

well, maybe more melancholy than sad

but at least i'm not glad.

I never said it would have made a difference. What I said is that they have zero situational awareness.

If one of them had a little bit of it, that may very well have changed the outcome though. Some people constantly scan their environment and those people generally tend to spot threats much more quickly.
