The fact that the teacher would send out the h.w a couple of days before school started and knowing that the h.w isn't due til two weeks after the first day of this class kinda shocks me.

Is this a warning ? Is he trying to scare those taking his class, all who have at least a semester of grad school under their belts.

Seriously? The teacher is being nice by trying to push you to get started on a difficult assignment rather than wait until the last minute, nothing more. That's grad school, it's supposed to be close to a full time job doing research and reading as if you were investigating a topic that your department was given a grant for.
