So TWC pissed me off for the last time. I disconnected everything and turned boxes and modem in. I called AT&T and tried to get Uverse. I dont think its in my area. I live in 27610, off Sunnybrook road across from TWC Pavillion. So i got clear 4g. Comes to $51 a month.

Here are my issues. When i connect my laptop to the modem I'm only getting 2.2 mbps down and .90mbps up. Modem has full (5 led)4g signal. I then connected my belkin wireless N router to the modem so I connect wirelessly, speed went way way down to .40 mbps down and .90 mbps up. I tried connecting directly to the router thru ethernet and speed went slightly back up to .99 down and .80 up.

What gives? For $51 a month Im sure I can find something better.

My experience has been that cell connections have a wide delta on speed.

But we have TWC and Embarq for redundancy here and it's been all over the freaking map tonight. I'm guessing everyone and their brother is banging away on facebook, youtube, and netflix tonight. I'd give it a day or two to see if it mellows out.

Its been two days. I dont think its gonna get any better.

AT&T doesnt have U-verse in my neighborhood and the only DSL they offer is 768k and 1.5m.

Earth Link has on their website 15.0 mbps down load for $40 a month for 6 months, then it goes up to $52. Thats a better deal than TWC, AT&T, Century Link, or Clear

I know they are the same. TWC speed wasnt the issue. Their poor customer service and forever changing prices is what pissed me off.

And RR turbo w\ power boost is 10mbps with a short power boost of speed up to 15mbps (which last only a few minutes IF the line has capacity).

Earthlink is slightly cheaper but its 15mbps the entire time.

earthlink =/= TWC but cheaper

Earthlink ( up to 7Mbps)
29.95 * 6months = 179.7
41.95 * 6months = = 251.7
Total = $431.4 for 1 year

TWC (up to 7Mbps)
34.95 * 12months = 419.4
Total = $419.4 for 1 year

^^But what does TWC go up to after that? And also do you have to bundle that shit.

Basically I am moving this spring and currently only have Embarq/CenturyLink. I am not going to get cable, but might get a home phone, so I really don't give a fuck about bundling. I just want to know what will be the best deal for enough internet to stream and game. I'm thinking like 10Mbps. Since its Mebane most likely, I think my options are CenturyLink, Earthlink, and TWC for me.

^unbundled.

I'm in the same predicament, moving in a couple of weeks. I only want internet, don't really have a use for cable right now.

[Edited on March 10, 2011 at 7:01 PM. Reason : it doesn't say anything about being a introductory price like the bundle does.]

I am actually the regional manager over Greensboro and Charlotte now.

DL and UL speeds with the service are largely dependent on how close you are to a tower. The signal is also effected by obstacles such as trees and walls. We have customers that have fantastic service in the winter, then it drops way off in the Summer when the leaves are on the trees. Unfortunately, it's just the nature of wireless internet technology.

That being said, I consistently get 10.0 DL and 1.0+ UL here at the store in Greensboro, but I can literally see my tower and there are no obstacles. So yeah, a cable internet connection will give you a lot more consistency, depending on how many people in your area are on the same node.
