The fact of the matter is, I'm not a tightwad or a cheap ass. I respect good service, and I do tip regularly. However I tip when its deserved, and when it's not, guess what. I don't. I'm the guy who leaves a penny as a message - you SUCKED. I've only done that a few times, and only when it was entirely warranted. I'm not referring to busy nights when all the servers are swamped. I'm talking about when the place is dead and it takes 20 minutes before someone so much as brings me a glass of water.

Many years ago, I once went to a Denny's late at night with a book. I was newly single amidst a fairly heart wrenching breakup, and all I really wanted was to just get out of the house. So I found myself at Dennys around 2am, though without much of an appetite. I took a seat at a booth and ordered a hot chocolate. When the waitress came back to take my potential entree order, she saw I was down, and inquired why. I didn't go into a long, drawn out sob story....but I gave her the gist as to why I was there, and I apologized for not having much of an appetite. She was an angel, we talked about relationships and all that goes along with them, and she kept the hot chocolate coming for about two or so hours as I read and calmed down. =) The menu price for the hot chocolate was around a buck and a half. I left her a $20. I'd have given her a hundred dollar bill if it was within my means at the time to do so, as she deserved it.

Consequently I found myself on a date a while later at a fairly upscale restaurant, but the service was less than terrible - it was non-existent. We're talking so sub-par that if I represented Zagat, they'd have been blacklisted. So I didn't leave a tip, and upon noticing, my date decided then and there that I was cheap, and I never saw her again. I didn't care because I wasn't feeling any sort of connection during our date anyway, and had already decided before too long that I wouldn't be going out with her again. Flash forward to now, and I'm involved with someone who would leave a $20 for a cup of coffee, or nothing if a tip wasn't earned and deserved. "I work hard and no one ever tips me", as she's put it.

To those who tip all the time, regardless of the quality of the service you receive (or don't receive), that's entirely up to you. To those on the fence on this issue - if you've ever sided with my perspective, don't be afraid to take a stand. I'm sorry if some servers decide to stick with a job that pays them less than minimum wage and depend on tips to make up the difference, but that was their decision. It's not up to me to pay them that difference whether or not its deserved or not. I'll tip when its earned, and I won't when it's not. I'm just sorry more people don't understand this concept.

One more thing to consider - the stupidity of the tip being a percentage of the cost of the bill. In this instance, the deal is $89, yet we're expected to tip based on the original price of $200? ....yeeeeah.....no thanks. So if I dine at the North Woods Inn and enjoy a five course meal for $40 (appetizer, soup, salad, entree, desert), standard tipping etiquette dictates I should tip anywhere from $4 (10%) to $6 (15%). Perhaps even $8 (for excellent service). But if it takes too long to receive everything in a timely manner so my meal flows from one course to the next, my tip is going to reflect that. Again, a tip should reflect the quality of the service, first and foremost. Not the total of the bill.

Here's a story from the other side. 4 people comes in, I happily greet them, took them to their table of choice (even though that table was reserved), tell them their specials, ask how their day was, etc. Came back with their drinks order, 10 mins later, their foods came out. Wife asked me for certain sauce, came back with it, then friend asked for other sauce, came back with, then wife decided she didn't like the sauce and ask what other sauce we had. Throughout their meals, I come over 10-15 mins to see how they were doing. Always refilling their drinks, their glass was never below 1/4 as I kept refilling. Everyone had on a smile, loving the foods and everything. Comes the check, came out to be $190. Husband left a $200 and told me that no change was needed with a smile.

Stop doing that. We're all doing fine. If we aren't, we'll catch your eye (if you're skilled at all) and let you know. Of course, do do that if you are very, very good-looking, and it's a table full of women. Good service is about being able to read people and respond to their needs...without constantly asking them...that's what makes it challenging!

I'm all business when I eat out. 1.) I don't need anybody to explain the menu to me. If I have questions, I'll ask. 2.) I don't want to take a few minutes to look over the wine list. Again, if I wanted to, I'd ask. 3.) I already know what appetizer I want, and I'd like to put it in immediately. 4.) I don't want dessert. It's fine to offer, but after the first time I decline, please don't ask me if I'm sure about my decision. 5.) Yup, you're a keen observer...I'm hungry. But there's no need to comment on the speed with which my companion and I can polish off an appetizer designed for four. In fact, no need to attempt small talk at all. 6.) You are a server, not a participant in my meal. Get out of my face.

About half the people who serve me understand all these things about me within a matter of seconds...because they are good at their jobs. The other half are all presumptuous idiots who think that serving is easy (and likely beneath them)...and that they automatically deserve a big tip for topping off my 1/2 full water glass during a key point in my conversation.

while that is true, waiters and other service-related workers who receives tips usually rely on them for the money. Their hourly wages (without tip) is usually far below what normal jobs make...and it is usually expected that they make up that difference in tips.

Damn it. Fell for the troll.

I was pretty sure you weren't a waiter.

But I wanted to express my views so bad.

(does outback still do that? i don't know, i haven't eaten at that nasty place in years)
