I haven't been able to fall asleep til after 3am for about 2 weeks (unless I have company in bed )

What do you do to get out of these habits/fall asleep?

[Edited on January 13, 2011 at 2:02 AM. Reason : currently wiggling my toes and ran out of sheep to count]

[Edited on January 13, 2011 at 2:03 AM. Reason : unfortunately, it's not possible to share the bed every night]

I used make a stance like I was about to run a race at a track and run as fast as possible into a brick wall.

I slept pretty well then...

have the same problem, 1. I am completely a night person so I am always up anyways, and 2. when I am just lying in bed I think about a lot of shit that keeps me up, hate it.

I usually try to listen to AM Coast 2 Coast to see what whackos they have on, sometimes helps

1 and 2 is me...it sucks

the best thing that semi-works for me actually is if i put on something that ive seen before of the history/nature/science variety. however sometimes i get into it even though ive seen it before, especially stuff about the universe

a very odd thing, is QVC... but it depends on what they are hawking. If its some loud guy then it doesnt work, but if its some old woman taking 30 minutes to describe a fucking 2 inch windmill figurine then it sometimes works

I drink a lukewarm glass of water or smell something that's lavender-based.

I usually end the night with a laptop in the bed reading TWW and Facebook. I also play angry birds on my phone. You could always pop a Tylenol PM too.

melatonin supplements are pretty good. I'm prescribed ambien but only use it in rare circumstances as it causes me drowsiness in the mornings. watching a movie you've seen a bunch helps, new stuff just makes you stay wake to watch it until the end.

If I'm in bed having trouble falling asleep it's almost always too late to do much about it.

If I start having trouble falling asleep I usually bite the bullet that night and try and get some work done or something and then make sure I do about an hour of moderate cardio after work for the next few days. That usually gets me back in a good sleeping pattern. Just don't exercise 4-5 hours before bedtime - it'll keep you up even more.

If I'm in bed for more than an hour without falling asleep, I say fuck it and get up to get some work done or play video games

^. Staying in bed being pissed that I can't sleep just makes me feel way more tired than if I get up and do stuff. Normally if I get up for an hour or two and do stuff I will get tired enough that when I get back in bed I pass out with a quickness.

reading late at night helps me sometimes

this is kind of strange but it works, if you stand beside your bed with all the lights off before you go to bed, doing nothing but standing very relaxed makes you wicked tired.

I just jump up and down on the bed until I hit my head on the ceiling. That usually puts me right out.

ThatGoodLockyou're wasting melatonin if you're doubling up... it gets less effective with larger doses.

If this problem has just developed lately, ClassicMixup should try staying up all night and until at least 8 pm the next day without napping. Then go pass out, having set your alarm for your normal time or 1 hour earlier. You might need some sleep aids to prevent rebound insomnia.

Some people have good results with benadryl and you can take up to like 6 at a time, but don't do this more than a week, the rebound insomnia can get bad after that. Me, I never feel like i'm really asleep with that stuff.

Sleep hygiene is so important- if at all possible, don't use your bedroom for anything but sleeping and fucking. make sure all extraneous power strip lights, cell phones, etc are plugged somewhere you can't see it from your bed. DON'T lounge and read in the bed or watch tv at non-sleep times.

If being in the water relaxes you, try a shower or bath before bed.

Your body is supposed to make melatonin in response to lack of LIGHT- that's the environmental cue that is supposed to set your circadian rhythm. So, 2-3 hours before your ideal bedtime, start dimming the lights in your apartment. Go buy some dimmer switches if you need to, because by the time you brush your teeth you should only be exposing yourself to twilight lighting conditions for optimum sleep.

If you don't nap and you mimic natural lighting in your apartment, don't be surprised if you wake for up to 1 hour in the middle of the night. It is an artifact of two-phase sleep, which is our natural pattern. Waking in the middle of the night was so common pre-artificial lighting that it is very well documented and people would even go visit their neighbors between the "first" and "second" sleep.

I have delayed sleep phase and non-24 hour day issuez going back to childhood, and it can be a struggle. however, taking an ambien every night isn't a good option. Sleep Hygiene and taking a bedfellow and melatonin supplements is the best way to handle it, especially if you think you have long-term problems.
