So we have a cat that's getting pretty bad...eating plants, tearing up the carpet, etc. Looking for a suggestion on a Nerf gun to shoot it when it starts doing bad things. I currently have an air powered gun, but with the required pump time the cat has time to see that I have the gun and bolts.

I'm looking at this gun right now but not sure it has the required accuracy.

The cat is relatively small and agile so it needs to be a fast and accurate gun.

Put a laser sight on it to distract her?

Haha, I like it. Might have to just tape our cat toy laser pointer to whatever gun we buy and get new batteries but its a step in the right direction

get a water gun. cats hate getting hit with water, but there's no chance of it hurting them.

Thought about that, but then we'd have to deal with getting things wet and possibly cleaning up the water. Also not sure of the range or requirement for air pumping.

Still a good suggestion, we'll take a look

Embed a syringe in it with a healthy injection of pentobarbital.

We had similar problems. I went to PETSMART and bought a SSSCAT.
This is a motion dector device... when your cat gets near it, your cat will get blasted by a quick burst of compressed air that they HATE. It has pretty good range ~2-3 feet. Plus, it will detect movement about 2-3 feet away as well.
The price is 20-30 bucks... but once you buy the main unit, you will only need to buy refill cans which are much cheaper...
It has an on/off switch.
I haven't had mine turned on in a year b/c my cat knows what it is and is scared of it. I can place it anywhere in the house and she won't go near it, for fear of being blasted.
I would highly recommend it.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751025

I originally got it b/c my cat jumped up on the TV stand at night while we slept. I would find footprints and cat hair up there in the morning... Not anymore!

EDIT: This mainly works if you want to keep the cat away from something... off counters, plants, etc...

If you are still feeling the Nerf gun, get the Maverick N-Strike 6 dart capacity.

Heh after you train that cat you can still have fun shooting things in the house.

I use a squirt bottle with water. I moved the nozzle out so I'd say the range on it is a good 15 feet...enough to shoot across the entire room. It's a laser beam of water until about the last foot. $1 at the dollar store!

That's an interesting concept too. I like the automated device more though, except for the part where it actually costs money.

I have experience using this particular model against cats. Unfortunately, the sound of it powering up is usually enough to scare them off, so there's no fun involved. On the upside, they will hide in terror at its very sight.

WHen you can surprise them and get shots off, though - priceless.

There are a few breeds of cat that actually like to get in the shower when their owner turns it on. I forget which ones.

Wait... you're that butch lesbian whore.

The Vulcan is loud, and makes noise even before it fires. Your cat would definetly be able to respond to it.

The Stampede is cool but is probably the same motor as the vulcan.

The Raider is fast and accurate and manual pumped so it shoots as soon as it makes noise.

I certainly hope everyone saying to shoot the cat is ok with coming home to their own pet having been shot by some douchebag who thinks its funny to kill people's pets. Perhaps some of you will get to experience that someday.

Going with the barricade, no priming required means a fast draw and shoot that should get the cat by surprise

I used to have a little spray bottle for the cat when he was a kitten. But it didn't work that well. He'd just squint and keep on going. It became a habit to the point that any time he was about to get into something he knew would get him in trouble, he'd start squinting, even years after being a kitten and years after having ever used a water bottle. I just yell at him when he starts to squint.

You could also try this method:

As fast as cats are, I'd either go for a water gun or an "air-soft" gun.
BUT cats are sneaky assholes, so if they get mad at you, they will piss on anything they can find that is soft. So this includes, but is not limited to: beds, couches, laundry on the floor, friends' baggage.

I'd go with water, and if you can do it in such a way that the cat does not know you are there, the better.

the maverick would work. Just cock it and leave it until you need it...then just pull the trigger.

Turns out the barricade had a motor that spins upwhen you turn it on, but I can still get a shot off real fast. Might just have to go buy a maverick
