I couldn't fit the whole headline up there but managed to catch myself before I entered "Woman shotguns dog for biting daughter"

Quote :
"Woman shoots dog with a shotgun for biting her daughter

Durham, N.C. — A Durham woman said she shot a dog with a shotgun and left it in the yard overnight Jan. 11 immediately after it bit her 2-year-old daughter.

Durham police charged Tasheka Laquon Beatty, 33, of East Knox Street, with animal cruelty the next day.

Beatty said she is not a cruel person, but she had to protect her child, Latalya, who now has a large scar on her left cheek and may need facial reconstruction surgery.

"I do love animals, but I ask somebody, 'what would you do, if that was your child?" she said.

Beatty said she had the dog for about a month and that Latalya was very attached to it. But the dog turned on her daughter on Jan. 11, a morning Beatty said she'll never forget.

"The dog was laying down asleep. My little girl got out of bed and went to the dog and that's when he grabbed her. That's what woke me up," she said.

The dog bit the girl in the face, and then went after Latalya's father.

Beatty said she wasted no time in taking the dog outside and shooting it with a shotgun, before driving her daughter to Durham Regional Hospital, she said.

The next day, Beatty said, she called police to have the dog taken to animal control.

Durham County Animal Control seized the dog, but refused to comment on the extent of its injuries and whether it was still alive Wednesday.

Beatty said the dog died.

Beatty said she doesn't regret shooting the dog, which she said was a 1-year-old pit bull named Moo Moo.

"It mauled my daughter... I take full responsibility. I just think that's what any other parent would do if they (saw) what I saw," she said."

So this woman lets her 2 year old wander around, alone, while she's sleeping

Nice.

Did she shoot it dead? The article makes it sound like she shot it and left it in the yard still alive.

It was docile enough to let her take it outside.

Well seeing as animal control was refusing to say whether it was still alive today, I'm going to guess she left it suffering.

Animal cruelty will fit right in with her assault record

^ Yeah for real... How the hell did she manage to bring such a vicious dog who was trying to attack people outside, and have it sit relatively still so she could shoot it

That's surprising since these dogs are known to be such great babysitters with no human aggression.

In all seriousness though, that dog is probably dead as a doornail. I would hope they would just euthanize the thing and end its suffering (and if it bit a child, then it would be put down anyway).

Hopefully the kid won't need too much reconstructive surgery :\

I think this thread will go the way of the tree hugger, but I'll just say this:

There is no animal life worth the cost of a human. Ever, period. I definitely would have shot it if I had any reason to believe the scenario could be repeated.

However, I'd never leave an animal suffering. I chased a blame rabbit for miles through the woods after it built it's nest in our new years bonfire. Poor guy

I'd kill a dog in a second if it was between my child and a dog, but I think we can all agree on that. Right?

^2 I completely agree... I just think something doesn't quite add up here...

For one, the dog obviously wasn't dead when animal control was called the next day. Yet the dog was shot the previous morning. How does a dog survive a shotgun wound for that long?

And you'd think getting her toddler to the emergency room would be the first priority... If the dog is that vicious, grab your shit and leave it inside or knock it out with something in the house and have animal control come seize it after you get back from the ER or right that second

She had to shoot it while she was still mad. Sometimes if you wait you end up finding excuses not to take out your anger. It's better to go ahead and do it so you don't end up pussing out later.

So getting away from the animal in question and getting your child who is bleeding from the face to the ER isn't the top priority.... Got it.

I mean, the damage was done. You're going to sit in the ER for like four hours anyway so you might as well get your maim on first.

there must be more to this story

the child has a single (large) scar on the cheek. We don't even know if this is a bite. The child may have been scratched or nipped by a dog that was startled when the 2 year old got in its face while asleep.

if the dog was vicious (and "going after the father"), how exactly did the woman take the dog outside and shoot it -- with a shotgun?

Quote :
"Durham County Animal Control seized the dog, but refused to comment on the extent of its injuries and whether it was still alive Wednesday."

we dont even know if the dog is dead, since animal control won't say.

Quote :
"Beatty said the dog died."

yes, apparently she says a lot of things. Like:

Quote :
"it mauled my daughter"

one scar on the cheek is not a maul.

sounds, to me, like she was more interested in shooting the dog, than even helping her daughter. She made a crying, scared, and bleeding child wait for her to chase a dog around with a gun before taking her to the hospital.

shooting a dog is just as humane as having it euthanized by the vet. just got to make sure you kill it on the first shot.

^, ^^

yeah, that's the main thing, riight there.

i can see a stupid bitch shooting a running dog at 5 or 10 yards with a 20 gauge, hitting it in the side or the neck, and just leaving it to bleed to death or die of exposure.

I bet most people here would shoot a dog that was attacking their 2 year old kid.

Based on the information in this thread, I can't really see how an animal cruelty charge is justified.

If she shot it, didn't kill it, left it outside for a day, then called animal control then animal cruelty charges are warranted.

If she shot it and it died immediately I don't think the charges are justified.
