^ That's me. I can't claim North or South. Sort of like a stateless refugee.

If I grew up in Cary, why would that not make me a part of North Carolina?

a lot of people say that i have an accent and ask where i'm from, but my dad was from fuquay and my mom has lived here since high school. i think they just get thrown off that i don't have a southern accent.

i certainly know a lot of NY/PA/IL/MA people in Cary, but most of my friends are "good ol' boys"

^^ Cary is like an embassy. It is sovereign NY soil.

It drives me nuts to hear people complaining about not having an identity when
- Their parents immigrated and they grew up in Cary
- Their parents came from up north and they grew up in Cary

Not everyone can identify themselves with a state in the first place. Ever met a military brat? And if you are from another country and never even had the chance for citizenship in that nation, you are not special, you are one of us.

Citizenship is more than sufficient to define identity in a civil society such as ours. If the place you came from looks to ethnicity for identity, we don't care. You don't have a dual identity. You have a different identity in a different value system.

I don't think anyone with non-southern parents can really become southern, no matter how long they live here... People usually try and hide their hick ways, not the other way around

Guide to Identifying Southerners:

-Has Accent
-Says dumb shit like calling shopping carts "buggies" or all soft drinks "coke"
-Loves nascar
-Flies Rebel flag and pretends it isn't racist
-Flies Rebel flag and openly admits it's racist
-Wears camo patterned hats/overalls & other "hunting gear" in non-hunting scenarios
-Pretends to have a monopoly on politeness/religiousness/"real american"ism
-Anti-Intellectualism

The presence of at least 2 of the above indicates a southerner with at least 97% confidence.

Appalachian...

My argument is that the pronunciation used at Appalachian State University should win. But that's just me.

You know the appalachian mountains are in the north too, right?

[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 4:30 PM. Reason : actually, going by some of the comments in this thread, 80% of it is in the north]

Born in Charlotte, both parents are from Charlotte. I used to have an accent but made a solid effort to drop it when I was 18. I hate NASCAR, don't care for most country music and baseball. I play and am obsessed with ice hockey. My only saving grace to keeping my "southern" card is that I love sweet tea.

Have you ever been to a large city not located in the south

Odds are baseball is the #1 sport there

Southern is not so much about location as it is state of mind, hence the Cary exclusion.
