This was first reported on http://www.pocketfives.com/ last night and seems to be at least feasible. The 3 players involved are Scoop Jardine, James Southerland, and Dion Waiters.
Covers.com still has this article up where they allege that Jardine's uncle has bet against the Orange a few times this season.
Quote : | "According to WYNN’s Andy Adamson, Syracuse players Scoop Jardine, James Southerland and Dion Waiters are allegedly involved in the scandal. Adamson reported the scandal, originally posted at poker website PocketFives.com, on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. He has since removed the entries, leaving many to question the validity of these rumors.
Popular Syracuse sports blog, OrangeFizz.net, is reporting a source who spoke to the SU athletics department told them the rumors are untrue and that the department has looked into possible point shaving. Even Jardine and Waiters have responded on their Twitter feeds. Jardine was very colorful, stating, "I love the game itself to much would never jeopardize everything I work so hard for with something like that! I play this game for free!!”.
Some of the allegations state that Jardine’s uncle bet on the Orange’s first meeting with Seton Hall this season, on January 8. Syracuse won the game 61-56 but failed to cover as a 7.5-point road favorite. Jardine shot 4 of 11 from the field, including 1 for 6 from 3-point range, to finish with 12 points, three assists and four turnovers. The team’s most recent loss to the Pirates is also under question. The Orange suffered one of the worst losses at home in the program’s history, falling 90-68 as 12.5-point favorites. Jardine scored 11 points in that game, shooting 4 for 10 from the field and finishing with three turnovers.
Both Waiters and Southerland sat out the Orange's most recent game, a 76-70 loss to the Marquette Golden Eagles as 2-point road underdogs Saturday. Waiters (6.5 ppg) averages 16:20 minutes per game while Southerland (5.9 ppg) puts in an average of 17:47 minutes per game this season. Jardine finished that loss to Marquette with 13 points and 13 assists, shooting 5 for 12 from the field with five turnovers.
Syracuse opened the season 18-0 but has since dropped four straight outings, failing to cover the spread in each of those games. The Orange are 18-4 SU with a dismal 7-13 ATS record heading into Wednesday’s road game against the UConn Huskies." |
I don't really understand the Marquette one because players don't shave when they are close underdogs. They want to give away 1-2 possessions when they are favorites to ensure the win, but not the cover.
This is from CappingTheGame
Quote : | "Syracuse – Seton Hall, First Game – Spread is -7.5, Seton Hall beats the spread. Syracuse fails to cover the spread with 6 minutes left to play, don’t score for 3 minutes, letting Seton Hall come back into the game and beat it.
Syracuse – Marquette. Spread is -2.5 for Marquette. Syracuse is tied late in the game by Kris Joseph. CJ Fair brings it to within 4 points. For the remainder of the game (about a 50 seconds only Scoop takes shots, all of them ill advised or rushed, which basically insures that Marquette covers.
Syracuse – Detroit. Spread is -17.0. Syracuse leads by 14 points with 4 minutes to go. Get outscored 9-6 down the stretch to insure the cover. Scoop fouls, turns the ball over, and misses a free throw in that time that help lead to Detroit beating the spread.
Syracuse – Michigan. Spread is -6.5. Syracuse doesn’t cover at the end after almost beating the spread. Kris and Scoop both have opportunities to make the lead 6 points at the line, both make one and one to keep the lead at a slim 5. Baye can beat the spread at the end by making both, misses both with game and Michigan beats the spread.
Syracuse – NC State. Spread is -12.0. NC State beats it after Syracuse squanders a first half lead.
Syracuse – Iona. Spread is -14.5. Syracuse is covering with 5 minutes to go until they let Iona beat them 16-7 down the stretch to beat the spread.
Syracuse – Providence. Spread is -13.0. Syracuse covers for a good portion of the game, including towards the end of the 2nd half, until Providence roars back and beats the spread." |
Obviously, ESPN and the major outlets have refrained from reporting to this point until something concrete comes out that lets them move forward. I'm not totally sure it's true either, but some of those game breakdowns from CTG look mighty suspicious.

I'd be more interested to see how Jardine's man fared than what Scoop himself did. It's much easier and less noticeable to shave points on the defensive end. 2/2/2011 9:54:37 AM |

Good point. I wish there was a good way to look that up.
Maybe that sort of info will eventually come out if the rumors gain more traction. 2/2/2011 10:05:36 AM |

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this goes on in the lower levels of basketball where there is much less public scrutiny on each game. Unlike football where only a handful of players could really have an impact on the score of the game, anyone in a basketball game could sway the outcome by 5-10 points without much trouble. 2/2/2011 10:15:00 AM |

Didn't see anyhing that looked at all concrete in those game summaries.
Haha I was on this website back when McPherson got nailed for fixing the state-FSU football game in 2003, to this day the NC State football homers deny it happened lol.
He got kicked off the team after the incident.
My buddy found out about it a few hrs before kickoff as the rumormill was going wild around tallahassee to bet the under (around 63). FSU failed to get past the 50 yard line once all game with mcpherson in and he purposely missed all his third down throws until he was benched.
Chris rix comes in and starts tearing us up immediately. Final score was 17-7 (they scored on special teams on a blown fake fg).
Next day mcpherson is nailed in a check forging or blank check scheme forget which. Then the gambling plot comes to light and bowden incensed kicks him off the team.
Did you guys know billy packer got accused of point shaving? Him and lenny chappell were investigated. He denies it of course which who knows, tough to prove in the stallball era 2/2/2011 1:04:18 PM |

wait, so there is no evidence that syracuse is shaving points, but there is overwhelming evidence that Adrian McPherson did?

I'm not disputing McPherson's off the field issues, but just exactly how does Chris Rix come in and "tear it up" to the tune of ZERO points? We held the ball for 40 minutes in that game. They housed our FG fiasco (Boulware) and no other scoring?
Back to Cuse, if they had a guy shaving points in multiple games, that's just not smart on many different levels. One, getting tied to gambling lands you in jail, forget losing your scholarship. Also whatever money that needs to be made can be made in one or two games, three maybe if they need to spread it out so that there isn't quite as much action on one particular game or if Player X couldn't shave without it being obvious. It looks like there are more than several games where the Cuse players shaved. That would be monumentally stupid.
But yea, in basketball, any starter can impact a game 8-12 points easily without it being noticed, but not more than a time or two. Whiffing (intentionally or not) on the defensive end is almost commonplace, I don't think State fans need any reminder of that.2/2/2011 2:33:45 PM |

The McPherson scandal came to light he was in huge gambling debt and fixed the game to pay some of it off.
Rix drove ~80 yards on both of his drives and we stopped him at the goaline when they went for TD's because they were losing. 2/5/2011 4:15:30 PM |

my mistake he was only in for one drive with 2:09 left where he went 63 yards down the field immediately. (looked it up)
we stopped them at the 1 yard line as they needed to get the TD.
they didnt cross the 50 yard line once all day prior to that because mcpherson was playing for the under.
Quote : | "That afternoon, Acosta called police to report the stolen check and offered McPherson as a possible suspect. A week later, after McPherson completed just eight of 20 passes for 80 yards and an interception in a 17-7 loss to North Carolina State, Capers was arrested, and all of Tallahassee seemed to know McPherson was next. Bowden kicked his quarterback off the team and, on Nov. 27, McPherson was arrested and charged with felony grand theft. " |
Quote : | "He was charged with illegal gambling, but the facts of the case involved his betting on and against Florida State for games he started for them. He plead out. " |
Quote : | "Adrian McPherson (2003), Florida State quarterback, was accused of Internet betting on pro and college games, including one involving the Seminoles. Prosecutors said McPherson used the account to bet on an Oct. 21 NFL game between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, and on his own team's games, including the Nov. 23 contest at North Carolina State when McPherson played poorly and the Seminoles lost.26 " |
For god's sake a ton of people knew about the point shaving BEFORE the game, thats why he got kicked off the team immediately before he'd even been charged with anything.
Bowden doesn't give a fuck about breaking the law, his entire team was made up of criminals and rule benders. Word is he was ENRAGED when he looked at the game tape and started screaming at his staff to dismiss him immediately. They wanted to wait and suspend him while the investigation was going on but he would have none of it.2/5/2011 5:26:09 PM |
