i think giving gifts is dumb as shit. every xmas/bday/valentine's day/etc. we trade gifts with each other. why don't we all just buy shit for ourselves so we get exactly what we want?

It makes you think about other people and what they like. The better you guess at getting them what they want, the closer the bond between you and the other person would be. If someone likes baseball, and you get them a soccer ball, it shows you didn't care enough about them to give them a thought.

i don't really like for people to get me stuff, unless it's my birthday or a special occasion when i know i'm getting somebody else something. i don't like being the only one to get something i guess. and i'm fucking terrible at pretending to like a present, so it's always real awkward when i open stuff because they can tell i probably don't like it

Lately I have enjoyed giving gifts more than anything else. I don't mind receiving gifts from people, but I like it best when my gifts are disposable. Some friends of my family always buy me a bag of moose tracks carmel corn for Christmas. I eat it and then it is gone. That is better than getting something that you have to keep and eventually just put it in your attic, only to throw it away a few years later.

^I once bought a friend a candle that came in a tin and the Muppet Movie (long story) for Christmas after I burned up her candle holders while trying to start a fire. Those types of things make giving fun.

The best disposable gift I every got was a gift certificate to Knights Play Golf Center. I told a friend to come meet me there and he got pissed because he thought I was going to use my gift certificate to pay for both of us (it was only $15). Then he saw I was planning on walking and said, "I'm not walking!" About 1 minute later he called me on the cell phone and said, "I'M GOING HOME!" I had to play with a guy who kept telling me how his wife was going to be pissed that he didn't come home after he went to the driving range. The guy behind us was pissed because the ranger screwed up and didn't have him on the list. Finally the two guys I was playing with skipped the last hole and the pissed off guy was waiting to tee off behind me. That was the only hole I got a par on. I sucked on the rest of the holes. I still lol about that night. memories > useless things that sit in the house.

My and my girlfriend have a "tradition" with gifts I guess.

Birthdays, Anniversaries, Non-Christmas Holidays, Valentine's Day, these are not "gift giving" days in a sense. Instead of giving each other gifts we can't really afford in the first place, we do something together, usually eating a place we can't afford to eat normally (sushi, higher end dining, event dining). If it's her birthday she picks, if it's a shared holiday we both pick, et cetera. Sometimes we just buy steaks and have dinner at home instead (Valentine's day is Steak and chocolate truffles from Azurelisa).

Christmas is the only holiday we give actual individual gifts. And even then, we exchange stockings where there's usually one medium-priced gift and then a bunch of smaller ones and candy, et cetera.

It works for us.

Giving is still way more fun.

i enjoy giving gifts because i think i put a lot of thought into them and it makes me feel really good when they're really pleased with it. i also just like doing things in general for people i love, like cooking, errands, etc. i think any of that can be considered a gift. i don't see why anyone would hate it, it's not like you even have to spend much money (or any in some cases) to give a really thoughtful gift.

^I just enjoy the fact that I always think of awesome gifts to give people. I kind of enjoy going to my twin cousin's house and playing with the Mr. Potato Head that I bought them for their birthday!
