Methane is less dense than air (assumed 0.68 kg/m3 vs 1.29 kg/m3). I can't remember the exact definition of "weight"...naturally, it is reasonable to think that methane is decreasing the overall directional force downwards since it is pushing up against your body - being that it is lighter than air, and attempting to rise up.

However, going by this googled definition, weight depends just on overall mass x gravity

If you assume your bowels are over pressured with methane gas, when you fart you would lose gas to equalize pressure and it wouldn't be replaced by surrounding air. You lose overall mass, and therefore lose weight.

Assuming this equal exchange, you replace light methane gas with equal volume of heavier air. You would gain weight.

Its ironic this thread would appear now, since I just learned the answer to this last week. I had food poisoning last week, which lead to a lot of extra gas ( among other things). And as chance would have it, I had just weighed myself right before I ripped off the longest fart of my life. So, I figured what the hell, let me weigh again.... and low and behold, I had lost .2 pounds.
