Even though [the child] is 3/4 white, and just 1/4 black. But that's OK, according to the "one-drop theory", even someone who is just 1/16 black would be considered black! I guess I have heard this theory before, but not defined so academically, and definitely haven't heard that name before. And it is a law???

There's nothing racist or cuckoo about that statement. Any black person who's dated outside of their race has taken flak from other black people. EMCE made a thread about this exact same thing.

Being biracial probably makes this problem even worse for Halle. I'm sure someone's accused her of running from her black heritage for shacking up with a white dude. It might seem crazy to people outside of black communities, but some black people don't see anything wrong with throwing shade at someone who's dating someone of another race. A lot of black people can relate to what she's saying.

She's saying "I'm not ashamed of my black heritage" more than she's saying "I reject my white heritage."

I think that a lot of you would be surprised at the sentiment many black people held towards Michael Jackson. To a lot of blacks, he was seen as giving up on the black race.... and was crucified for it.

Nowadays, in America your race is what you tell people it is on forms for the Census Bureau, EEOC, and other entities, and its main use is to track statistics to ensure that officials, employers, and landlords aren't discriminating; in the old days, the government explicitly discriminated against minorities, especially blacks, so the standard for whiteness was exclusionary (you had to look white, and all your known ancestry had to be white, for you to be considered white) and for blackness was inclusionary (the "one-drop" rule, also sometimes just looking black was enough to count).

The old attitudes persist today, explaining why many a self-described "black" person has light skin and European facial features.
